I have a channel leading to my moat to the north of my gate. Dwarves consistantly circle down to the ford, then all the way back up to the top ford just to drink a few spaces north of my channel. This happens with every dwarf, every single time.

I know this can be fixed by building a well, but shouldnt dwarves know there is a fresh water river right in front of them?

not always fixed with a well.  i have four wells for my little fortress, and dwarves STILL wander up the shoreline of the cave river to drink in odd little spots.

that and fisherdwarves.  i have a complex system of elephant traps outside the fort, and the fishers are always wandering through them to find remote fishing spots.  it would be nice to be able to designate spaces for fishing / drinking, maybe with the previously discussed "unclaim" feature.

Maybe you should hear the story of one of my failed farm floodings.  I managed to perma flood a farm and a fisherdwarf got caught inside standing on one of 2 squares that wasn't covered by water (the other being diagonally down left).

He died of thirst.

They don't do a path-find to search for drink spots, so they choose spots that are far away if there are lots of looping paths.  They should prefer to drink from wells though.  Not sure what's up there.
