How Can we be sure that He Doesn't Believe in what He's Saying?

And how is it a crime for Legally Consenting Adults to give money too this man?

Because you disagree with Him?

Just as it's totally legal for consenting adults to give money to fake nigerian princes?

There's the matter that he sort of, you know, convinced these people, some with children, to give up their entire lives because the world was going to end. Only problem is that the world didn't end, so his more devout followers are pretty much screwed to poverty for the rest of their lives, and he still has plenty of money despite all of this. How long those lives will be is also an issue, as some of his people already tried or succeeded in killing themselves because of his prophecy.

So, no, this doesn't have to do with disagreeing with him, but it does have to do with him getting out of this rich while his followers suffer because they were deluded enough to believe him to that extreme extent. Put simply, I say he owes them because of that.

Clearly the world will end on the 2nd of January, 2131.

As for the discussion about making such things a 'crime,' such is simply hypocritical without also outlawing giving to any religious organization for any purpose other than aiding the poor/those in need. It doesn't take a "cult" religion to give so much money to religious groups as to impoverish oneself. Many religions even describe giving all you have to the religious group in question as the ultimate show of faith; and this persists even in the most common world religions. Even the 'end of the world' prophesies in most are essentially cults anyway; the only difference between mainstream and cult is that cults specify an end date while mainstream simply says "give as much as you can for your entire life since you never know when our magic end-story might happen!"

As an example, per capita GDP in the US is about 46k/y. If you look at the most popular religion in the US, the religious texts state 10% before taxes (a figure which may or may not be important, depending on denomination; but for this I will assume it is). That's approximately 4.6k/year. Multiplied by life expectancy (appropriate, given per capita GDP is calculated based on total population, rather than working), and you get about 70 * 4.6k = 322k over the course of a lifespan. Again, this number will vary based on denomination, income, ect; but this is the figure which would be about what you would expect on average to be advocated you give by this religion's texts. Over the course of a lifetime, you're looking at, for most religions, a monetary contribution similar to those given by members of a cult.

The end result is generally not all that different between a religion and a cult as far as the monetary price goes. Neither should be illegal.

If he doesnt believe what hes saying then it would almost certainly be a kind of fraud but if he does believe it then its probably legal.

I'm reminded of the old webcomic Goats. That had a good reason for the world ending in 2012, i.e. the computer running the world was programmed by Mayans.

Found the link to that specific strip

Edit: Also the sequence with the extended explanation
