Yes. It's sinful because you're basically telling God to fuck off (more diplomatically, you're rejecting the slightest chance of fitting anywhere into His plan, even without being aware of it) and it's mortal because once you die it's too late to ask forgiveness.

Indeed.  Picture perfect middle-class suburban family, and the mother slits her children's throats over a cockamamie prophecy she saw on a billboard.  It would be very interesting to follow up on those kids some years from now, and see how they turn out.  Especially since they're pretty much guaranteed for court-ordered custody now.

had nothing to do with the billboard prophecy. It was disasters that made her think the end was near.
