I've always been a little confused on where the Rapture lines up in ordinary Christian circles.  I remember meet a lot of people in highschool who devoured the Left Behind books, including a friend a gave me his copy of the first one (little does he know that I think it's incredibly bad writing on top of any religious context).  I also remember some people going door to door for group-watchings of the movie version.  At the same time, I've never seen a Rapture-based bumpersticker, or met anyone who isn't super-religious or over my age who ever mentions it.

I always thought it'd be pretty prevalent around here, since the word-puzzle basis of the Rapture was invented by a Dallas minister, but it's yet another facet of Dallas history the city doesn't like to talk about much.

The thing about the Rapture is that the world isn't ending.  The Protestants are leaving, but we're stuck with the Catholics (not that I mind).

Sooooo...

I think that the bible actually gives the number of people who will be raptured as one-hundred and forty-four thousand*. That's such a small precentage of the world's population that I don't think that abybody would even notice.

* Although that specific passage could arguably be interpreted as only and specifically giving the number of the saved who will ethnically be of semitic descent ("144,000 from all the tribes of Israel".)

You know that whole thing with the meek shall inherit the earth jazz, does that mean the world will become a better place once all the Christians leave?

It still has nothing to do with  a Rapture.  Plus, just about everybody who was anybody in Bible Times wrote an apocalypse.  Why do we single out the Book of Revelation?

Not really no.  But the end of world is a good source of amusement.

Oh, it's a thing alright. The farther away I get from my city, the number of billboards advertising the newest end of the world increase exponentially. I could probably make a line graph out of it.

Why do we single out the Book of Revelation?
Because not only is Revelation by its own admission the batshit crazy hallucinations of an exiled old man, it can be twisted to mean just about anything you want it to.

It seems that the impending end of the world is a facet of human psychology, given that legends about it shows up just about everywhere we do. I personally think it's due to a desire for a sense of absolute closure in life, not having to deal with the unconfortable idea that you will die but the rest of the world will carry on. Instead, people are attracted to the concept that they will see a firm end to humanity, and thus won't miss out on anything or be lost to time.
