And now raptors are terrorizing Heaven, disemboweling and eating all the angels they come across.

Of course not.  The world was created last Tuesday, including all our planted memories of people predicting the End Of The World on dates where it had not yet even started...

I think it's an in-built get-out clause by the Great Programmer, just in case the thing started to fall apart due to insufficient idiot-testing in the Alpha phase of development.

It's partially a socioeconomic thing. You tend to see more apocalypticism when the economy's bad and/or there's major social change. People lose their jobs, feel politically alienated, they develop a deep-seated urge to just watch the world burn. If a preacher comes along and tells them, "Hey! The world IS going to burn!" then not only does it validate their feelings, but it gives them some rock of certainty to cling to in a time of uncertainty.

Less a confusion than Rule of Cool (most people associate the image of deinonychuses with the smaller Velociraptor because of Jurassic Park, and the actual Velociraptor is too small for the joke) combined with Incredibly Lame Pun (hard to make Velocirature out of deinonychus.)
