If you look hard enough you'll find that just about all of the big "paranormal mysteries" floating about were solved years ago.  The people who didn't want to hear the explanation just drowned them out.

If they made it this far, there's no way it's collapsed yet. More likely they only rented the billboards for a short time, figuring that anybody not convinced today won't be by next week.

Alternatively, the billboard company got tired of complaints.

I also think it's because the pay stopped, but only because it's now the 13th.  You see, the intended message from Those Who KnowTM was that the world would end on the 12th of May, but someone at the printers made a tyop in the galley proofs that never got spotted. :)

(Or someone got 12/05/2011 and 05/12/2011 mixed up, one being the proper date format and the other being the silly Merkin way round[1], and they're hastily cutting their losses so they can keep their powder relatively dry for the run-up to the actual occasion on 5th of December. :) )

[1] J/k.  Though it is a quite plainly illogical format.  (Personally, I'd actually rather go with YYYYMMDD anyway!)

That's actually the similar to other theory about how my non-mainstream religion's prophet screwed up. He wrote the date of the apocalypse on a napkin but couldn't thereafter figure out whether or not he was holding it the right way up.

(Seriously*, when people ask me what my plan is, in the event of a RL Zombie Apocalypse, I don't so readily share my plan of escape and location of the hidey-holes I'm going to try and use.  Who knows whether Best Friend I Am About To Tell All My Zombie Escaping Plans To will be among those being zombified, and yet still retain memories of where to find nice, juicy, brainz-containing me...  Not a risk I want to take, thankyouverymuch.  Needless to say that I have several places in mind, from somewhere I will head for if I can still use my car for long distance travel and there's going to be no problem with military checkpoints, down to some rather specific places which are very local to most places I am likely to be when the balloon goes up...  And none of them are the local mall...)

*leaning towards semi-seriously...   But only slightly.  The beauty being that these plans could also work for some of the more mundane unforeseen catastrophes that could befall my nation, or my bit of it.

Not so sure on this front. A lot of zombie survival plans are kind of terrifying to listen to.

Of course what's really going to happen is the death of modern civilization. Magic will appear and dwarves, elves, and trolls will pop up, evolving from humans. Cybernetic implants will come, and people will start logging into a virtual reality, and refer to hacking/computer use as "decking" after the new name of their computers, and grand overarching villainous plots involving world destruction and/or domination will become commonplace.

Did I mention the government will fall apart and there will be rampant corruption? Because that happens too.
