What should the main party look like?

Ragnar - Sorta detective noir, with a battleaxe
Alena - Can punch through five feet of solid stone, and gets Jessica in a way the other heroes really don't.
Cristo - Awkward but powerful.  Could be the strongest character of all if he'd just stop being an idiot.
Brey - There's a reason for that!  Hope you like exposition...
Taloon - Three words: merchant ninja army
Mara - Can set anything on fire, up to and including lava golems
Nara - I still haven't shown off the Silver Tarot Cards, have I?  Pick her, they're pretty great.
Jessica - She's the Legendary Hero, but you technically don't have to use her if you don't want.

Huh. In the remake most of this happened before chapter 1.

Just so you know for future LPs, which I hop you'll do, googling "[GAME] OST" works wonders.

And there's this site.

Interesting!  So it's "village gets destroyed" and then a cut to Ragnar?
Where do you go if you die?
Normally, when you die you get resurrected at whichever church House of Healing you most recently saved at.  But if you haven't saved yet, you show up at the "first" HoH in the chapter.  That's what happened when Taloon died in chapter 3, for example; thanks to my heavy abuse of savestates I'd never actually got around to saving the game, so Taloon's corpse appeared at Lakanaba.  In Chapter 5 that place is in Branca, which we'll see in the next update.

...you don't have to have played DW4 to understand what is going on or how everything works...
Oh good.  One of my major goals in doing this LP was to show off the game to people who'd never played it, but everyone posting seemed to be DW fans already so I wasn't sure how well it was working.

I'm an avid gamer and thus I'm quite conversant with the tropes at play in this game, but I have never played any DW game. This LP is quite easy to read and understand, and for that I salute you.

And damn, that is one hardcore fallback plan.

BTW, did you walk over to check out the corpse by the pond? It's another detail in the cavalcade of depression that is Aktemto, and the end of Chapter 4 in general. (Orin...!  :'( )
I didn't; I assumed it did the same thing as all the other corpses we met during that expedition.  Should I go back to visit in Chapter 5?
It's a minor detail, but a poignant one. It may be a bit belated by the time you get to Aktemto again, but go for it. :)  Also, if you check the sandy area in the hero's ruined village (where Celia was laying before), you can find a small souvenir that was left behind.

Congrats on another great installment! :)

Edit:  Since I think the one breadbocks posted is the PS or DS version, here's the NES soundtrack on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/ARGCi#grid/user/987D949BE8616178.  The newer stuff may technically be "better" but the NES music will always be my favorite. :))

Is it just me, or do all the big bads in DW/DQ games have goofy names? I remember as a kid going "Necrosaros? That sounds like a monster you kill 1,000 of on the way to the final boss."

So there I was, putting together the latest update, when I decided to add some music links (since, after all, other people had already done the hard work of finding the music for me - thanks Phenixmirage, breadbocks!).  The link the DS remake OST works nicely, but the handy fellow with all the original soundtracks up on Youtube appears to have closed his account literally as I was using it.  See for example this link.

I can't seem to find any other channels like it.  We may be stuck with the DS remake music, people.  Which, much as I hate to admit it, is not a huge loss; the DW4 soundtrack was great for its time but there's just only so much you can do with a triangle wave, two square waves, and some white noise.

Also:

Heh.  You're not wrong, but Necrosaro has some backstory that at least takes some of the crazy out.  We'll get there.  The remake christened him 'Pissaro', which isn't really better IMO.

No problem about the music, but man, that guy was trolling. xD

He was Pissaro when DWM 1 came out, IIRC. I think they realized how much of a stupid name Necrosaro was right after localization.

As for baddie names, DracoLord wasn't that bad, and Hargon is a name to conjure with. Same goes for Mirudas and Deathmoore, and DarkDrium too.

Haha wow that's pretty funny that that guy closed his account... I listened through all of them yesterday. Most of it reminded me of other DQ/DW games (surprise surprise), but it was pretty good.

I definitely agree about the big bad names in DQ/DW games though. I feel like they just had whoever was coming up with names for generic enemies come up with the name for the big bad, then inserted it into the story rather than having the person/people writing the story come up with a good name. Although, having just played through DW5 on the DS some of the people important to the story have surprisingly important-but-generic-sounding names too. I wonder if it became a trope of the series at some point. Hargon and Mirudas are pretty good as far as names go, but DracoLord would be a recolor of a Draco in any other game and Deathmoore and DarkDrium are.... well, they sound like bad fanfiction, really. It's almost on the level of satire like "Darkdeath Evilman" from ZHP.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Probably a holdover from the standard set by Final Fantasy. "Dark Lord" was sufficient for them, and me :P

Well... crap. I can't believe the guy up and disappeared like that. What are the odds? :P

Pisaro is actually his original name. It got changed when the game was originally localized. (There were a *lot* of names changed in the localization of Dragon Warrior 4.)  I can't remember exactly why, but I always got the impression that his name was Saro, and the Necro- prefix was more of a title or honorific. The Saro's Shadow monster may have had something to do with the idea.

I feel a little bad having this discussion now.  The name 'Necrosaro'/'Pissaro' name actually has some interesting plot behind it, but at my current rate of updates it'll be another six months before we get to it, so...yeah.

Nothing for it but to push ahead, I guess.

So wait, Jessica just robbed her birth father? Maybe she's not so different than any other teenage girl.
