What should the main party look like?

Ragnar - Sorta detective noir, with a battleaxe
Alena - Can punch through five feet of solid stone, and gets Jessica in a way the other heroes really don't.
Cristo - Awkward but powerful.  Could be the strongest character of all if he'd just stop being an idiot.
Brey - There's a reason for that!  Hope you like exposition...
Taloon - Three words: merchant ninja army
Mara - Can set anything on fire, up to and including lava golems
Nara - I still haven't shown off the Silver Tarot Cards, have I?  Pick her, they're pretty great.
Jessica - She's the Legendary Hero, but you technically don't have to use her if you don't want.

The voting was close for a while - STAVES OF PUNISHMENT very briefly held the lead!  But wiser minds prevailed, and it looks like Jessica's getting a sweet present next update.

Which will be out in the next day or two!  This "smaller update" shit is so easy.

This "smaller update" shit is not easy. Apparently there's some kind of rule that whenever I start a short post, I have to add enough tangents and asides to bring it up to full length.

it's been two days.  No update.

...IT'S BEEN TWO DAYS.  NO UPDATE.

IT HAS NOW BEEN TWO DAYS, AND THERE IS NOT AN UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111one

But seriously tho.  DQ4 is my favorite of the entire DQ series, my favorite NES RPG, and one of my favorite RPGs of all time.  OF ALL TIME.

I am adoring this LP, and am having more trouble waiting for the next one than a dwarf withdrawing from booze has standing next to a barrel of rum.

The updates may take some time, but they're always quite worth the wait. Plus, this one had more bad dirty jokes, so, double worth it.*

These last two updates are absolute gold.  I am adoring the 8-bit Theater-esque development and rationalization of the party.

I often do that when i'm playing games myself.  Alone.  Forever alone.  Because noone likes NES games anymore.

So, I've been thinking something since you started this magnificent LP. The color palette/sprites/art style all look very NES, but everything's so SMOOTH; no hard pixel edges to be found. Why? Did the NES do that and I somehow just never noticed? Is it emulator magic?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

NES emulators pretty much all have alternative rendering methods that can make small improvements (or problems, as we saw in a few of his screenshot shaving artifacting at the top and bottom of the screen, especially when shotting during movement.)

JNES, the one I use for example, has the following options:
None (meaning no secondary or alternative rendering-  it's purely from the NES' Ricoh 2A03 8-bit processor)
Software (The graphical data is sent to your real CPU for rendering, generally looks about the same, albeit faster/higher GFPS)
2x Super SaI (Not sure what it *is*, but it enlarges the picture by 2x and smooths it out some.)  This, or similar, is probably what he's using.
And three options to emulate Composite, Component, and S-Video methods to an NTSC SDTV respectively.

Some emulators, like SNES9X, have more advanced tricks, like 3x SaI SuperEagle.  This basically triples the size of the image (effectively 3x the pixels per actual game-pixel), smooths it (by 'shaving' those jaggy edges, which it can do since there's 3x the pixels-per-pixel now), then adds smoothing similar to anti-aliasing as an after-filter.  The difference is pretty extreme.

I'll post comparisons.

Here ya go!

It shows each of the popular rendering methods.
Order (left to right):
None
3xNone
3xSaI
3xEP
2xSuperEagleSaI

IMHO, 3xSaI is the best.  Some of the others are more CPU intensive (Pfft, like it matters) and 'do' more, but 3xSaI still gets the best result for image quality, with only the downside of *slightly* darkening the image if there's a predominant black background (which we see in these images) or lightening if it's predominantly bright colors.  This is due to the smoothing method it uses to blend.  It's hardly noticeable though, and absolutely not something you'd notice in-game.  But boy does it make some games look a LOT better.

Pictures from Breath of Fire.  One of the best RPGs of it's era and before, and almost the only game you get to turn into a MOTHERFUCKING DRAGON to KICK the everloving SHIT out of your enemies, and not just as a general plot device or awesome powerup.  That's like, HOW TO FIGHT 101 for this series.  But even if you don't fry their ass, your char tends to still be inexplicably badass-  even in BoF3 when you're a small (rather dumb) child who literally just flails their sword while covering their eyes, you STILL manage to deal considerable damage.  Ryu must have some Taloon in his ancestry somewhere....
Speaking of which, in BoF, you have what has GOT to be taloon's reincarnation.  Gobi, the fishman of Prima.  Also an aspiring merchant, also fat, and also joins up with the party for riches.  When the party gets stranded on a tiny desert island and are suffering from sunburn, heatstroke, starvation and dehydration, he arrives and decides he just can't leave them, he has to help!  So he sells them the magic item-  Gills-  that lets them breath underwater and joins them.  But not for free, of course.  Any *SANE* merchant would charge normal price, which is like a million gold, srsly.  Wouldn't you pay $1mil to be able to breath water indefinitely?  I know I would.  But he gives it to them on CREDIT!
An absolutely insane business move that ends up saving the world AND paying off, despite seeming mercantilically* unsound in every possible way.  Sounds very taloonish.
Plus he does the same 'I'm gonna run a shop!' thing.  Although he doesn't buy a store, he just sets up at any of several locations already established.  Or maybe he already DOES own them?  It suggests he's very profitable and successful as a merchant, maybe he does?  Or maybe it's just a liassez-faire type situation?  Or... who knows?
Also, like Taloon, he fights with an abacus.  Or a spear.

* = Not actually a word.

Janglur nailed it; you're looking at Authentic Nintendo Graphics post-processed by 2xSaI, which is the best Nestopia has to offer.  Back when I was first planning this LP (which was five months ago what the fuck) I planned to use Authentic Nintendo Graphics for Maximum Retro Flavor, but the test screenshots all looked like ass so I compromised.  You can find a (very rough) explanation of the algorithm on its creator's page - which includes some source code, if you're into that kind of thing.

Speaking of which, in BoF, you have what has GOT to be taloon's reincarnation.  Gobi, the fishman of Prima.
Gobi's an interesting guy; he gets some of the better moves in Breath of Fire's (admittedly sketchy) plot.  The Gills were a pretty slick application of supply and demand, and IIRC he's instrumental in one of the battles against the Grim Reaper.

Unfortunately he takes Taloon's theme of "mechanical suckage" to unheard-of depths, ha ha: lousy stats, lousy gear, and a terrible set of abilities which, in one final fish-person "fuck you", can only be used underwater.  Taloon at least has the Merchant Ninja Conspiracy - what does Gobi have?  EbbX?  Well, he can turn into a giant fish; that isn't nothing.  And he's part of one of the good Fusions.  But still.

Hmm.  It's still way too early to be asking myself what game I should LP after this one, but...does anyone know of any good BoF LPs?  I'd rather broaden the LP world than make the thirty millionth FF6 LP, if you see what I mean.
