Okay maybe I was wrong.

I was always told/understood it as, once your population hits the cap, any migrant waves on their way that year will still come. Then the enxt year they will not because you're at/over cap. I set my population cap to 80, and at the end of the year had 99 dwarves. I was okay with this.

Spring rolled around, I'm cleaning up after an ambush, I look over to watch Larry the Cable Guy make a fool of himself, glance back...

Migrants have arrived.

My population is now 109, and it's early spring. Did I miss something? I went back into the d_init file and made sure my population cap was sitll 80, and the baby cap is 5.. so... What went wrong? [This world was genned after I changed the files, so I shouldn't need to change the world-soecific raws, should I?]

I was under the impression that whatever waves were already en route when you set the cap would still come. Not a calendar restriction, but a travel time restriction; if you have three waves en route (or one or six) then they're still coming.

I'd check the world-specific raws anyway, just to be sure. It may have used defaults for some reason. If not, the migrant waves will cease eventually.

My fortress is pop-capped at 100, but they still keep having children (and as a result of adults dying and children being born, over half my fort's population is juveniles), so my fort's population has swelled over 120 at times. If I remember correctly, I got a few more migrant waves after the limit was hit, but I didn't take note of the season.

There is nothing to do with pop cap in the raws, the only place it is defined is in the one init file.

And I think Bob is on to something in his reply there.

Hm.. well I hope the mountainhome isn't too far off. I don't like having a whole bunch over the cap because I end up throwing the migrants in the military, and once they start suffering losses, I don't get migrants to replace the dead. So I'll have 1 really good unit, and another with like 2 dwarves until they get wiped out. Then once I get to like 79 suddenly 20 migrants and we're back to square 1.
