It's about time. Games are an awesome form of artistic medium. It allows the player to be almost complete immersered in a created world and for them to interact with said world.

Due to that alone it can explore themes more deeply. Take doing something uncontrollable like killing an enraged yet unarmed man. In a movie this can be watched and it can be disturbing, but having the player do it themselves or even choose what they would do can mean so much more.

For a game to be consider art it should merge immersion, gameplay and story all in one. This creates the best exerpience all round. A lot of games that go for the "artsy" route forget that they are a game and not a glorfied graphical novel.
Examples include The Path (great but not much of a game), over the top shooters like CoD (less story/gameplay more "experience") and pretty much every JRPG to date

Game I consider art: Baldur's Gate series, Planescape: Torment, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, Psychonauts, Half-Life series, Portal series. Dwarf Fortress from a more academia viewpoint (feat of programming)

Also fuck Australlian rating system. Western Australia just fucking secede already, ironback hicks.

That's something I never quite got. So adult games are banned because there's no rating for adult games? it boggles the mind.

Yea, that is basically it. Every game needs a rating, and if there is no rating for said game, it becomes contraband. There is no other way to explain it without hand puppets, one of which having a penis extending from it's forehead.

DooM 3 for having graphics years ahead of it's time.

Years ahead would suggest no other game with those graphics came out till years later. When it was first presented, it looked pretty revolutionary. But once it came out, not really. Chronicles of Riddick came out the same year and both looked and played better.

Guys, you can't just name every mainstream and indie game you like. That demeans the purpose of the word "art". I only said every AAA game ever because my ideal type of art is that which entertains, and not give a message; stuff like Halo, Doom, Pong, Pac-Man, etc. Now I may not like every AAA game...but they are still art because it meets my pre-determined and arbitrary definition; you guys appear to just attach the label of art to anything you like...that's not how the NEA should work, especially since they are in charge of government money!

Here, I offer Shades' view on art as a starting point. Use that.

I wish our Australian government would be more open minded to games as an artistic medium. Hell, we don't even have a rating for adult games, so any games for adults are outright banned. L4D2 almost didn't make it, and when it did it had limbs hacked off!

That's something I never quite got. So adult games are banned because there's no rating for adult games? it boggles the mind.

Movies have a very hard time getting into theater if they are not rated or rated NC-17. They are not allowed to advertise here in the USA. NC-17 can be anything from porn to a married lesbian couple going on a grocery shopping trip. No, really. The MPAA is full of insane people and religious leaders pressure them constantly.

Really? I mean really? They see a normal homosexual relationship in the same regard as porn? The fuck is wrong with these people?!? No wonder games have had a hard time getting this far... I blame everybody on this earth but myself, for either acting against the cause, or not doing enough to support it! But not me, I was busy.

Hmm to me the Myst series is art. Maybe the submachine series too. But then again, if cinema is art, does it means every movie is art ? cuz it would mean that every game is art too, not just the ones we think have something special about them.

More importantly than grant money, with video games considered Art they are protected by the first amendment. So jackals like Jack Thompson will have to find a new rock-and-roll to pick on.
This was my first thought. Well, not about Jack Thompson, but now video games are legally protected as art just as film is.
I've always maintained that video games and film can equally be art, the only issue being that there exist fewer developers intent on making art than there exist similar directors.
Anyway, I'm just pleased at this development though few particularly artsy games come to mind right now.

I am kinda confused as to why the debate took so long

I mean not all games are art... but not all paintings are art either.

Heck there is one game in particular that was uttarly horrible in the gameplay department but actually had a great subtle story with an unfortunate inexcapable downer ending.

I never played it truthfully

Though from what I understand... "escort" is the only word I need to say to explain why I never went out of my way to play it.
