Why did my animals suddenly start fighting each other?
« on: May 07, 2011, 02:23:27 pm »

I established a pasture outside for all of my grazing-type animals, and everything was fine for a couple of years until, suddenly and inexplicably, I started getting combat reports that were different from the usual Badger, Badger Man, and Panda Man attacks I had been getting.

I looked into them, and it turned out that the animals in the pasture were attacking each other and also occasionally attacking the dwarves who wandered through the pasture to pick up logs and such from outside.

What is causing this?

Animals will attack eachother if they get too close.

Why? Because they are retarded. I lost 5 expensive animals to pet Helmet Snake attacks.

Is this an effect of Pastures? Because I used to (before the grazers had to graze) just let them all out of their cages after buying them and they wandered freely wherever they liked, mostly hanging out in the meeting area / dining room. That room got pretty crowded and I never had animal fights break out.

Yes. You have to give animals their own pastures if you don't want them to fight. Most need a large grazing area anyway, so you should just assign them each their own.

Pastures are infamous for it. It can still happen outside of pastures, but it's rare.

Gah. So I have to give each freakin' animal its own pasture, to keep them from fighting?

I think I'll just designate most of the outside as a huge pasture and let them take care of themselves. Survival of the fittest and all that.

Always keep helmet snakes and other stuff that can breath fire and stuff or have poison (GDS and GCS, anyone?) in a separate area.

They'll all insist on hanging out in the same 3x3 area. Injuries and death will be rare, but you'll recieve constant spam letting you know that the cow has grabbed the donkey by the right hoof with her left hoof.

I give all my animals a 4x4 pasture, huge grazers get 6x6. No fights for me, happily ever after.

Animals become violent when cramped in an area with other animals...

This could very well be weaponized. Stick 1 male and 1 female turkey in a 5x5 room. On one side, 5 nexts, the other side, a bridge acting as a wall. Have that drawbridge open into a room where attackers must go through to attack. Let the birds breed, and once there is an ambush, release them.

The plan is most foul indeed.

Use five turkeys or more and there will be an assured Birdsplosion. Caution advised.
