Chaos Point
« on: May 07, 2011, 11:30:01 am »

Sandhurst, a beautiful city on the beach. It's got sun, surf, smiles, and plenty of sand. Of course, there's smuggling of all sorts of varieties, from drugs, to guns, to humans. The police force is large and very professional, at least in the city center, but are overstretched and corrupt in the barrios. Gangs fight wars, banks get robbed, people die, stuff gets stolen, pumpkins are smashed; but it's hardly Detroit, thankfully. What better place could there be for you to go?

What is Chaos Point?

It's a squad based tactical shooter with strong role-playing elements. More usefully, it's a chance to do some destruction for shits and giggles, or whatever motivation your character feels like having. It's a revival of a stillborn game (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=33469.0) that had a lot of fun RP but never got going properly.
It's the wacky antics of a bunch of skilled killers as they're forced together in sitcom situations!

For the moment, I'm not going to limit character submissions. Feel free to discus things amongst yourselves, form into your own squads, or even start RPing. I'll step in with plotiful stuff as need, when combat starts, with explanations, or when something comes up. If there's any concerns or comments with the game or my system, do bring them up. I respond to email, PM's, IRC, posts, and ritual summoning. This post will be used for character sheets and the like.

Information about the setting will be found here, as well as other stuff like that. Sandhurst is a big, tropical city. The police force are competent, but they're not going to come down hard on you unless you do something splashy. Lots of crime, especially various smuggling in the area. Totally a semi-rip off of Burn Notice's Miami.

I'm not sure if this post will actually ever be needed, but better safe than sorry (especially when I need to put up vehicle stats and the likes). Did you know that this introductory section was just short of 4000 words when first written and took 16 pages in its text document?

Name: Desmond Black
Trait: Dexterity, intelligence (2)
Weapon Specialization: None
Combat Skills:
 - Demolition (2)

Non-Combat Skills:
 - Explosives Manufacturing (2)
 - Electronics (1)
 - Programming (1)

Bio: Desmond Black is a heavily bearded caucasian male in his late 20s...he's a bomb maker. Claims he learned from doing construction work...

Desmond seems to sell his services to anyone who could pay the bills, criminals, terrorists, intelligence agencies...it's all the same to him. He comes cheap, and he doesn't have "explosion" envy-the smaller the bomb, the better in his opinion. Like all the best bomb makers, he's both paranoid and highly professional-he prefers homemade explosives to improvised. Most of his employers say he's a bit soft for field work.

If your looking for him, head out a few miles from Sandhurst, into the swamplands-he's got a fortified little compound out there, wired to blow himself and everything else in a half a mile radius to Hell in case the CIA comes to get him. Bring some snacks.

Inventory:
*38. Revolver
Case of False ID's
Mechanical Kit (for making BOMBS)
Ea-250 Laptop
Bomb Defusal Kit (Optional)

Done. Also, My computer schedule is...chaotic. I might never even be able to play on IRC. :(
So my character is a specialist that can safely played from the background, or from post.

Interested, though could you post an example character sheet. I'm a bit lost on how to do it...

Also, assault rifles are in the shotgun spoiler...

Alright, I put up an example character sheet and pulled shotguns and Assault rifles apart. Stupid spoiler tag.

Yeah, the rules are really long, but actual combat should be pretty fast paced, although there's plenty of opportunity for number crunching if someone wants to try to be maximized.

I meant the stats for the weapons. I don't expect separate stats for every type of close-combat weapon imaginable, but something general for knives, bats, swords etc.

It looks like I didn't take the melee text document and include it in the big text document. I'll go dredge it up at the next available opportunity with all it's long formness.

Melee combat occurs at Range =1 and Range = 0, with certain weapons providing a bonus or penalty to them. 1 is consider standoff distance, while 0 is the two fighters being in close. The combat is based on each character making a d10 with modifiers. For example, if a character with a baseball bat is fighting a guy with a knife, the knife user would try to close to range 0, while the baseball fury is going to try to keep his distance, where the bat would provide a pretty big bonus (+3).

At range zero,
Baseballer rolls d10+3
While Slasher attempts to close, which gives him a plus 1 for d10+1

8 to 3 for a difference of 5, which means that knifer doesn't get in close, and baseballer smacks him hard when he tries (so we'd head to the damage calculation section, although the bat can't cause any bleeding except for head wounds). Once knifer gets in close, he gets a big bonus and the batter gets a penalty. Depending on the playability status of the characters, knifer might work on stabbing or just keeping batter in close, while batter might try to disarm, get his distance, or do damage. Also, weapons are firable in melee, especially dangerous with handguns. Surprise attacks are a very big bonus as well.

There's stats for rough classes, bats, knives, long blades (machetes and swords), but nothing else. I figured that actual close combat would be a pretty quick affair with a stealthy stabby type, not two ninjas fighting.
