Has finished working on a mysterious item...
« on: May 07, 2011, 12:29:42 am »

I have a friend who does not yet know that he is destined to become obsessed with The Fortress.

Theatric gestures work well on him.  So I set out to create the Ultimate Delivery Mechanism for Dwarf Fortress.

Behold: Brainconquered, a pine box!

https://picasaweb.google.com/112881926797158188093/May62011?authkey=Gv1sRgCKL7h4rW3PfTRA&feat=directlink

The USB key contains an enhanced install of 3.23, with heavy graphics support and some mods to make life a little easier in the fort (crematorium, library, etc).  Dwarf Therapist, of course, and also hyperlink shortcuts to the Wiki (with a special link straight to the Quickstart Guide).

My beard... is growing...

This is... amazing.

I would devote my full attention to anything delivered in this manner. Good game packaging ideas as well.

This is indeed the Ultimate Delivery Mechanism.

You wrote "Craftsmanship".

Is this a typo? I'm not even sure "Craftsmanship" is a word.

It is very much a word.

Words are my friends.  I don't mess them up when I'm putting them under six coats of polyurethane.

Don't you mean Craftdwarfship? I still think "Craftsmanship" isn't a word. Silly humans and their made up words!

Sadly, a dwarf didn't make this box.  A lowly human did.

Stupid plains entity file... ruining my life...

I lack the appraisal skill.

-On another hand. That's one dwarf load of dwarfiness.

By "3.23", do you mean "0.31.23"? If so, go ahead and patch it to "0.31.25" so he doesn't get military and hospital bugs in such big numbers! :)

More gaming companies should package their software in such a manner.

I think more people would keep the media if it came attached to a dwarfy amulet.

Ugh, sadly, there will be no more patching.  The majority of hours spent on the project was actually spent tweaking the raws to use more recognizable graphics, etc... changing all the characters for the individual plants and fish, etc.

He can learn on 31.23 - it's what I've been playing during the building of this thing, and I don't notice too many bad bugs... then he can download new versions, frothing at the mouth like the rest of us once he's hooked.

Patchouli, it's a wooden box, handcarved and augmented with baked polymer clay, then the whole thing painted and layered under about six coats of high-gloss polyurethane.  The interior is a polymer clay plate made to look like stonework, with indentations sized to fit the pieces of the amulet.  The amulet itself is a micro-USB key, decorated with epoxy putty sculpture.  That's painted gold and heavily varnished, and then mounted on a chain with a metal charm and cabochon gemstone.  It's got a really nice weight to it.  :)

I had a lot of fun making it.  I'd be happy to make more for a reasonable price to cover my costs ($30ish), but they'd have to come blank - shipping them with Toady's software on them and getting any money in return would be unfairly profiteering off work that wasn't mine.

That hardly covers your time though.

Do you have a website or anything that you sell off of?

I normally dont care about correct usage forum sections, but this should realy be in the General Discussion section to garner the attention it deserves.
