I have a problem with the newest version but I don't th
« on: February 18, 2008, 06:16:00 am »

I just newly realized that there is a version 27 and up (YAY JOY!) and I could upgrade from my long long version 23. However, when I played it I got up to the map. Sometimes I couldn't even create a world but I only get up to 3 minutes into the game and my laptop freezes. It refuses to respond with anything as a total freeze does. I had to restart my laptop many times and everytime without fail my laptop freezes whenever I try to start it. Dwarf Fortress mode or Adventurer mode it's the same. So "gloomy me" Goes to play the 23 version again. I was really looking forward to z axis and making very deep pits of Dewm. Anywhoo I'm just hoping for some insight on this. And if there is a solution out there that's great! if there's nothing I could do but get a better laptop that's bad. But just posting it out there for the sake of maybe I'll get an answer. I've searched the forums for any freezing that happens to the whole computer while playing and I haven't found any. Thanks for reading again guys and help me if you can ^__^

Wow.  You've been out of the loop for a while.

From the sound of it, you've just updated your previous version of DF with the new one.  That isn't going to work.  At all.

Make sure it's a seperate and clean install of the newest version, and it should work (note:  worldgen and standard playing has gone up ridiculously high since your version.  It may seem like the machine has frozen at some times, and it will eat up all of your machine's CPU so other things will take longer than normal to respond).

Also, what are your system specs.?   I'm mainly interested in your memory and CPU.

THanks for replying so fast! Well it is a clean install. I mean it's in a separate folder and stuffs. As for specs on my lappy top. It's a Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20 GHz 1.00 GB of RAM Windows XP. It's an HP. Well that's what I got from system properties lol...Not really fond and good of finding what my little baby of a machine here can do really lol.

Well, your specs look alright.  Better than mine, anyways.

So, you've got the new version off to itself, you generate a new world using it, and you can't play for more than a few seconds before it freezes your whole machine?   Hmm.

Does there seem to be any specific point where it freezes?  A specific loading screen or such?

Well. I've turned weather off, Temp off the whole maximizing your framerate thing. It freezes during fortress map selection. It also freezes during stepping down to a slope and up. It freezes while I select what dwarven skills I need. It freezes during creation of rivers. It freezes (almost always) after map is made and it's cleaning up. So many freezes lol...

How long do you normally wait to make sure it's not just processing?

Well I've got a little trick. More or less. I have a mute button. If I press the mute button it's supposed to light up if it's registered. that's how I check usually. But I guess 3-10 minutes. 3 if it's frozen the thing so many times that I hardly care anymore. lol

The NUMLOCK key is also good for checking, but DF sometimes takes up so much CPU that the light gets delayed.  Worldgen these days takes upwards of 20 minutes, and I even had one take a full hour to generate (but that one had a slight problem due to sloppy modding), and saving/loading the world can take quite a few minutes.

But this sounds like it may actually be freezing up.  As a test, run the task manager (if you're using windows), and position it so that you can see the dwarfot.exe process by just looking to the side of the DF window.  Then, try to start a game.

If the task manager stops updating for several minutes, it's most likely gone.  I don't really know how to help you then, as I haven't experienced any crashing or freezing this version that wasn't modding-induced or just a simple slowdown.

I've actually done that. In fact to focus all CPU power on DF I closed down explorer.exe and new tasked DF. It still froze. I dunno what's the problem really. It's not crashing or anything. It just freezes my laptop. Hm. I've had several programs that take up the same amount of CPU power as Dwarf Fortress and they never froze on me. More or less noticeably Dawn of War: DC. sometimes in a really heated battle it leads to 300,000 and higher. Hm. Oh well...

You probably have already, but I'll still suggest. Try compatibility modes. Also, look at the error log (might be something in there). Finally, in very rare circumstances, an aggressive antivirus might object to the game's writing stuff to disk, so add DF to the "trusted app" list, or whatever that's called on your antivirus systems.

Hm. Never thought about compatibility. Figured the first one worked so this one should too. Anti virus eh? Hm again. But it's kinda weird though. thanks for the tip and I'll try later on today after I get home from the university.

Check the notebook and see if it is warm. It might be overheating.

If not click on start->run and type "msconfig" then hit enter.

Set your startup mode to "diagnostic".

Try then.

If it is still not working right go to www.hp.com  and make sure you have the latest graphics drivers.

Don't forget to change your computer back to normal startup afterwards. If you use a fingerprint reader or have one activated don't start in diagnostic mode since you won't be able to log in unless you boot in safe mode by hitting F8 as you boot.

Well thanks for the advice and I'll try and see. No it's not overheating cuz I've had that problem before. The laptop shuts off automatically when it overheats. Soon though I tried your diagnostic thingy (Very nice! I ought to remember that.) Although it shut off my intarwebs I was able to play dwarf fortress up till choosing a location for my fortress. I was at first thinking it might be working now cuz Seriously. It was running so smooth. It was so neat and fast too. Then my comp froze. So now I'm downloading some ATI drivers which I don't know if it will help or no. Thanks for the help though guys
