Your mere existance irks me.
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:11:40 pm »

Alright so, I'm ...  a perfectionist? have a minor case of OCD? Might be somewhat mentally damaged? I dunno, call it what you will, but it gives me quite a problem.

You see, I love for my forts to be stone. This is because I can smooth it out and have it all look uniform and neat. The various colors [stone types, gems..] don't bother me because it all looks neat. However, I also like to keep my forts near the surface, usually extending only 4-5 levels down. Thus my problem.

I tend to hit dirt. Sometimes there's a ton of it and I just have to deal with it, or build my fortress further down [which is what I usually do.]

However my current fort, which is built into a huge chunk of solid limestone, has a problem. the entirety of the fort is in limestone/claystone/diorite. However, one room [cafeteria] and the hallway leading to the dormitory hit dirt. This irritated me greatly, because I cannot smooth dirt. I can build floors over the dirt floor and that works [though the big green C when I mine is imcomprehensibly annoying.] however the walls are a different matter. I smooth my walls, as mentioned, but these stick out like sore thumbs. This time I've opted to mine the dirt and replace it with a constructed wall, and this gives me the uniform look I go for, but now I can see the dirt/limestone on the other side of the wall. And that annoys me to no end.

Is there a trick to dealing with this? Do I just have to suck it up and suffer? Will superman get there in time to save Lois Lane?

Nope. Lois Lane is going to be snatched by the Goblin and then integrated raped into Goblin society.

Dig out all the dirt and make a big room, flood it with water, then add magma to make obsidian, et voila!

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

just don't let the obsidian get muddy and have plants grow on it, or otherwise, it shall turn into dirt itself.

its one of the current bugs.

It is really only a problem if you don't get the mud cleaned up before plants grow.

If I were you I would turn the place into a statue garden. That or a well room. Maybe a goblin zoo?

How about a noble's statue garden/goblin zoo that is about to become the holding tank of a well?

I had a similar issue, in that I wanted my entire above-ground fort to be engraved stone, and also not obsidian.  You have two major options, both involve hacking.  First save your fort before you mod raws.

1) Remove the [LAVA] tag, and place it on any other stone, soil, or mineral.  Now, when you combine water and magma, this material will appear as an engravable stone.

2) Remove the name OBSIDIAN from the entry for obsidian, name it whatever you want.  Find your desired material, and name it OBSIDIAN instead.  Run DFHack, and use DFLiquids to pain obsidian.  It picks the entry in the raws for the name OBSIDIAN, so whatever currently bears this name will be placed.  Keep in mind that a wall crated this way has no floor above it, so you need to place "obsidian" on the floor above it also to make it a real "wall".

Alternatively, move the [LAVA] tag where you want, and then use DFLiquids to place a square of magma with f- then next to it (like in the hallway) place a square of water with f+  This will make the magma remain still, as it's in a non-flowing state, and the water will flow out from its position, touch the magma, and cast obsidian (or what have you).  You can then smooth the floor to get rid of the resulting mud, or place a cabinet/table/chair/etc on the mud to remove it.

Coincidentally, I swapped the [LAVA] token and the OBSIDIAN name with RAW_ADAMANTIUM and ran the game.  Using DFHack, I could then paint adamantine walls that could be smoothed and engraved.  However, when I breached the magma sea, I got the curious message "Obsidian!  Praise the miners!" and there were spires of obsidian, even though obsidian itself lacked the deep_special tag.  This was very strange, but not an issue because I had acres of adamantine already.

You are not alone. I HATE striking dirt while I'm digging out rooms, for the same reasons. It's caused me to abandon a fortress a couple times, or savescum to redesignate the room elsewhere. I've used DFReveal to ensure I don't hit dirt. I love flat maps, since they generally don't have a lot of variance in the level of the dirt/stone border.

Same. I tend to avoid mountains, and I always try to get a river, but one that's relatively flat, not the grand canyon-esque ones I normally find. I can't STAND dirt. If I got an entirely stone map, with just one 10x10 spot for a farm, I'd be happy.

Is there a trick to dealing with this?
yes.

its a big yellow pill called "fuggit".
taken as needed, fuggit will relieve any and all symptoms of OCD and caring too much about things you can't change.
Fuggit, from the makers of "whatever".

Just be sure to dig deep enough you won't ever hit dirt.

It's not like you're going to ever run out of z-levels unless you mod worldgen. Just go 5+ below the lowest surface level and there's almost no chance you will hit dirt, ever, and you've probably still got 5 - 30 levels to go before you hit the first cavern. It's not like 5 extra steps to get to the surface will destroy your FPS or anything either.

As for what to do about it now.... take one of them "fuggit" pills, or abandon and make a new fort.

Sounds like another drug I've heard of, Fukitol

See, problem with that is if you go down, you get caverns instead of dirt, which can be just as restricting and annoying.
