How to give your dwarves more badass epithets.

OK, nearly every time a legendary soldier of mine gains a surname, it is mostly nonsense and gibberish.

I have however seen that most megabeasts, when they gain a surname, the surname is directly linked to their spheres. Dragons are a well known example.

I was wondering if anyone attempted to give dwarves sphere tokens so they can get more fitting surnames when they kill enough sentients, not complete nonsense ?

Think you could test this by adding it into the raws then generating a world and using legends viewer.

I'll try it out.

Wonder if there is a beard sphere.

Well...

the sphere of wealth gave me some inconclusive results:

Tholtig Chamberthrew the Hero of Perfecting - 13 kills
Olin Attictongs the pride-blaze of esteeming - 9 kills
kivish ragprides the free grips - 6 kills

Everyone else doesn't have a title.


oops hold on, I think I accidently added extra spheres, like volcanoes and wealth and war.

edit: will post results of volcanoes only.

Yeah better results on this one:

Zaneg Dimpleworked the Warm Glow - 27 kills
Kivish Tattoostaff the Spark of Fires - 12
Momuz Yawnrough the Warm Flame - 10
Iton Halllull the Warm Heat - 10
Minkot Arrowfountains the Flickering fires - 9
Bomrek Cloistersevere the Torch of Heating - 8
Lokum Goodchannels the Sweltering Fires - 6
Meng Earthencloister the Glow of Warmth - 5

I love those names :D

So yes, if you want good titles, add sphere's like volcanoes and greed :D

I find it amazing that a dwarf that can strike down a Bronze Colossus single handed, gets killed by a minotaur.

Do we know of a list of spheres AND their associated words?  I know the sphere list, but is there a language file somewhere that tacks the words to the spheres?  I'm pretty sure this is hardcoded...

There is a stringdump of all the sphere's on magmawiki as well as the 40d dump that had children and sibling sphere's.

I.E. I think volcano shares words from the fire/earth/etc. sphere's.  If you look in the language_sym file, you can kind of get an idea of what words are possible by charting between family sphere's and the related words.

Would take a bit of text manipulation to output a file that linked every word with every sphere, but I'm sure someone would be able to do it.

edit: but I don't think you can manipulate the words that are associated themselves by manipulating the sym file, as I just added some rather... interesting words to the volcano subset in the language_sym, and did not see any changes after world-gen.

So SPHERE changes the epithets when they gain one, and SELECY_SYMBOL:REMAINING is for the second names.

I just need to make sure I don't accidentally exclude the name "Urist."  I like having lots of Urists running around.
