FFFFFUUUU I knew it!
« on: May 06, 2011, 05:46:40 pm »

Setting up my new fortress.  Everything going swimmingly.  Defense laid out.  Bedrooms built, assigned.  Dining room engraved.  The wheels of industry are turning.  With one exception.

"Oh, I'm missing a glass furnace" said I.  Of course, my map has no sand, but I'll import some.  Then I thought, "I just know some dwarf is gonna get in a mood for glass and that'll be the end of it.  Oh well.  What are the odds, eh?"

Built the furnace.

Immediately.

IMMEDIATELY.

"Urist McGlassdorf has entered a bullshit mood"

He claims the furnace.  I'm thinkin, "Well, big loss.  I don't need a glassmaker at this point in the game anyway."

Then I look at his skills.  He's my top weaponsmith.  *Sigh* I guess I better get his grave ready.

Build another furnace and hope for a speedy caravan.  And check your neighboring areas.  If you've embarked on multiple biomes, you may have sand in the corner of the screen or something.

No sand anywhere, not expecting a caravan for a bit.  Also a goblin ambush is mucking about outside, although most of them are hanging out in cage traps.

AKA: embark with sand bags. Very unexpensive, and comes with a very cheap bag.

Yeah, always embark with 5 or so sand bags, half a dozen fuel, a few stones, and a few bars of metal.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a bag of sand costs less than an empty bag.

Or maybe there's a god who's just completely insane and sends you to Detroit, Michigan in a new body if you ever utter the name "Pat Sajak".

It's like, 20 a bag, and only 5 for sand? or is it as low as 2?  I forget exactly.

It's Murphy's Law.  The chance of a dwarf having a mood related to stuff you don't have and won't have for a while is almost 100 percent.

You don't understand! If I don't have electrum, bismuth bronze, slade, and giant cave spider silk, how can I ever hope to appease the dark voices that demand Krumplestarmk, the Fed Butterfly, artifact crutch be created.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then youkill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.

This is why I turned artifacts off.
