Ghost dilemma

So I saw my first DF ghost in my fortress, some random macedwarf who appeared and claimed a tomb.  The problem is that my only military casualties have been a few odd recruits, and this guy doesn't even appear on the list of possible memorial engravings.  So how do I get rid of the ghost of a dwarf that never existed?

He's a caravan guard.  You may only bury them.  Never seen an aggressive caravan ghost though, so if you're running a post-ghost-lag version, I wouldn't care.  Adds flavor!

Huh... I don't remember any of them dying either, but at least that would explain the (+«bronze mace»+) my captain of the guard recently switched to, despite being a hammerdwarf.   >:(

I don't see a body anywhere, though.

Z stock should reveal it, take note of the ghost's name to make it easier to find.  If he managed to get magmatized or atom smashed, you're out of luck.

Hm, points to an empty spot in a pond, which makes even less sense.  If he somehow fell in and his body rotted completely, shouldn't his stuff still be there?

Are you in a biome where freezing occurs? If the pond froze and unfroze, that may destroy the body.

When I was reorganizing my inventory to fit all by books on life and death into various bags and things, I looked at my inventory and saw that I was multigrasping a necromancer slab.  It was pretty hilarious.
I think that would be an excellent way to impart the critical lessons of life and death to the ignorant masses.

It disappeared due to flowing water.  At random times, things will become invisible is pushed by a fluid.  Dwarves -should- still grab it, I believe.  Never had this happen to myself.

Yeah, I am, but it also doesn't make sense that the skeleton would still be appearing on my corpse list if it was destroyed.

Just empty the pool and grab the body. The body is there, it's just invisible due to a bug.

I did empty the pool, but my dwarves aren't doing anything there.

slightly related. How do you assign a coffin to a non-citizen? citizens seem to be automatic..but if I want to bury other people who died on my map, how do I do that?

Wait.  Dwarves who've died will take a coffin, non-entity members (elves, humans, goblins, Cacame) will not be buried ever.

I think it works for non-citizen dwarfs the same way it works for dwarfs. With non-dwarfs, I don't think you can bury them.

About the captain, you might want to assign him a specific weapon so he will go back to using a hammer.

Make a better hammer than the mace he has now and he will switch to it.  I can't remember for sure, but "better" may be in terms of monetary value and not necessarily usefulness as a weapon ...

Or just assign him a different weapon, like he originally suggested. There is a system in place for that.
