do you buy games only for the mods because it looks like everyone does (if you do not like me creating a new topic for this just get it removed)

Nope, although having a few good ones makes makes me a hell of a lot more likely to buy a game.  2 or 3 decent mods will greatly improve the replayability of any game.

Agreed with lordcooper. I typically buy a game for the game and mods are a bonus that help with replayability.

(Also, the topic itself is just fine, but the title leaves a lot to be desired... at least make it relevant to the subject of the thread)

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

No. For instance, I play vanilla DF. And there are lots of other games that aren't moddable that I play.

OTOH, Fallout 3 and Oblivion would have been horse shit (IMHO) without mods. And Morrowind, while still great if played vanilla, would have been infinitely less awesome without a variety of mods that made it more difficult and interesting.

It's a plus, but it's not everything. What it can do is make a mediocre game great if the community is great and resourceful.

I usually won't buy a game unless it can stand on its own feet.

I usually don't learn about any mods until several years have passed.

And what about Console games?  Until very recently, they could NEVER be modded.  You had to like the game as is.

That's part of the reason I stopped buying consoles. Especially now that you can just hook up a (much more powerful) desktop to a giant plasma/LCD TV via HDMI. I can't personally justify spending money on a console system that could otherwise be stashed and spent on an infinitely more useful/practical computer later on.

I hardly ever play mods, but I have a big budget so I tend to buy a lot of games instead.  :)

Mods aren't a necessity for me. I don't flip out when developers say they don't have any current plans to support modding. I like mods, appreciate a game that supports modding, but it's not why I buy games in the first place.

Plus, virtually every game, after time, will get modded by users. It's just a matter of how well the devs support them.

For BRAND new games coming out, I get irritated when fans go berzerk that the devs aren't making modding a feature or a priority. "Yes, pleas spend another 2 to 3 months creating a user tool set for your brand new engine. Oh and make sure it can do graphical modding too, for that DX 11 graphics engine you guys just finished."

It's not trivial to make things accessible to users, and a lot of gamers don't consider that at all when they want modding. Like people angry that DICE wont support modding for BF3. Like, srsly guys? An entirely new lighting engine, destructible physics, and all that jazz, and they're honestly going to take the time to make a user friendly tool set? Get real.

Don't apologize, change the subject heading.

And here is how you do it: First, select "Modify" on your original post.  Then, change the text in the box entitled "Subject".  Finally, "Save" your results.

Titles can even be different on non-starting posts, but it doesn't affect the subject seen from the parent topic.

I once installed a bunch of mods in Fallout 3 and it never was stable again, even after I reinstalled.  :)  Not that the game was ever THAT stable to begin with.

The trick is to just wait, especially on any Bethesda product, for a good year or two years after release. By then, the modders have gotten their shit sorted out, someone has created a front-end for loading and unloading mods that's probably better than Bethesda's, and people can put together lists of what works and what conflicts.

I rely on community threads for Bethesda game modding though, either way, to point me to what I'd enjoy most. Because there's a lot of chaff.
