It's rather unfair to claim Bioware game adherents possess a trait found among all MMO player-bases. The responses are even rather tame compared to typical comments in some other MMO communities I've interacted with, but I may have become desensitized as I tend to play PvP-centered MMOs where, as Lord Dullard points out, most players are complete and utter a-holes venting their aggression upon the rest of humanity*.

Pretty much took the words out of my mouth.

The OP's account of the Bioware community was NOTHING compared to Blizzard, Valve or random DotA-esque game fanboys, and was par for the course for the average MMO community.

That said, MMOs often attract a class of people for whom the MMO is their only hobby and becomes a part of their very identity. MMOs are, as they say, Serious Business. One of the major reasons why I no longer call myself a Gamer in public is how much flak I received from WoW players who felt personally insulted that I did not have a subscription to WoW.

I think MMOs have a different appeal than other games. I've not played one, because the idea that I'd have to pay for it is a big turn off for me: it would make me feel compelled to play it instead of other games, because otherwise I'd be wasting the monthly fee. Which makes it kind of like working, only you pay instead of getting paid.

Maybe  "MMO fanboys" are intollerant like that because, likewise, paying for their continued gaming makes them take it far more seriously?

I have played so many MMOs over the years, and left them all quickly in disgust. I agree with the sentiments definitely on this page of the thread, at least the ones before this post.

Except I've seen this level of hatred from Bioware fanboys only, really. Usually towards Square-Enix etc.

Well the Squenix fanboys are too busy arguing with themselves over 'who is hotter, Tifa or Yuna?' to start raging about other games. I'm sure if they somehow managed to form a common front, they would spew hate just as much as any other fan base.

I can believe that they make good stories and write pretty fine dialogue but seriously, RPG?
Mass effect was a failed attempt at doing something RPG-ish, they failed so hard that they had changed the sequel to a shooter instead of RPG.

      We understand that you may have seen some very disparaging or uninformed comments from people who consider themselves, or claim to be, members of the Bioware fanbase. As you know, any internet group is bound to attract some crazies, as well as people who just take their games very seriously, and who tend to speak without thinking first. While we do normally attempt to keep them locked up, they do occasionally escape and make a bad name for us before our assisted living personnel can find them again. I'm sure you understand, even your community, Bay 12, has a few such members (whom fortunately have yet to show up in this thread). I would like to reassure you that most of us are quite civil, and respect Bioware for such classic games as the KOTOR series and Neverwinter Nights. We think part of the problem is that Bioware may have taken a few bonks on the head recently, and created games such as Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 which attracted a slightly less patient audience. Nonetheless, we maintain some faith that with time and daily pills they will recover.

You also forgot: "Who's a better villain, Kefka or Sephiroth?". The sephiroth crowd tends to win these arguements, even though Kefka actually done something that video game villains never do: Succeed.

I don't know, and it's hardly relevant.

You gave a polarizing opinion, based on 2 games of their catalogue. Clearly you donīt agree with the direction they are going, and have a rigid sense of what RPGīs are(where Baldur's Gate might or not fall in). Your response, disregarding your true opinions, has appearance of gasoline near a fire.

My point was that it's beyond silly to generalize fan(boy?)s and haters in 2 camps. You can choose which camp you belong to, if that's what you prefer.
