My embark has a waterfall!

27 Z-levels or so.

Now, how do I take maximum advantage of this?

27 levels? Very nice; it's hard to find waterfalls higher than 10 sometimes.

There are a few things you can do; one approach I once did was create the entrance to my fortress behind the waterfall, and create a machine to "turn off" the waterfall, by redirecting it to either side of the bridge instead of straight onto it. It made a lovely defensive curtain that washed goblins away as they tried to rush into the fortress.

I see a new defense design for my next fort.

This does sound like proper dwarf use of a waterfall.

Won't the dorfs get washed away because they saw a sock in the river or something??

or you won't use it for ambushing ambushes?

I had a friend who would focus on carving their rooms around falls. Happy thoughts everyday.

Entrance through the falls is easy. Two bridges, One a level higher two tiles wider than the actual entrance bridge. That keeps the water off. Then you can build another bridge to mine under and create your fort in the waterfall, then close off the two bridges and viola, impenetrable entrance.

Can you shoot bolts through a waterfall with any reasonable success?

Awesome. Especially if you turn it on and off with a raising drawbridge, so it looks like the dwarfs tongue is sticking out.

It was only opened for caravans and migrants, and then only when I felt like letting traffic through. Otherwise it was left splashing the bridge, in case of thieves or ambushes. No dwarves ever went for the clothing in the river, since there was no way to path to it.
