I usually count on cloth from the first caravan too, because I hate to have strange moods I can't satisfy.  Plus I like having an epic hospital, the dwarves can all sleep on the floor for all I care, but my hospital is pimp.

This is sort of evading the issue, but why do you want cloth so early anyways?
I haven't had to make new clothes...ever, so far. Actually I find that the only things I ever want are weapons, armor and metal.
Bags. Sand. Green glass pump stack.
Bags. Dyes. Coloured bags.
Quarry bush leaves. Bags. Prepared meals worth more than the entire caravan.

Bags. Red coloured, emerald coloured, midnight blue coloured bags. Must have more bags, my precioussss...

Well now, seriously. Bags are a reason to wish that the first caravan brings some cloth.

Everyone slowly back away from the noble.

Sllooooowly now, we don't want to spook it.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then youkill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
Dwarf Fortress: So horrifying the players would rather talk about nice things, like Warhammer 40k.

Other areas I would have corrected him.  It surprises me how often people fail to recognize the gender listed in my name.  But here, I would let the issue slide.  We are all dwarves here, we all sport the same beard.  (Except some beards are longer than others... just sayin'.)
I defer to your dwarfy logic on the matter. ;)

Personally, I like grabbing a piece or three of cave spider and giant cave spider silk cloth from the first merchant just to cover moods that demand silk.  I've lost dorfs before because I had all but one type of cloth and his mood wasn't happy with the selection I had available.

But ... but ... then you won't get a mason to make you a chert grate that has hanging rings of badger leather?! (even if it is only worth 3600*)  :o  :-\  ???  ::)  :)   [I'm still not sure what to use it for ... but it's my first artifact in my current fort.]

Use it for a mist generator. Then your dwarves can look at it.

I SAID LOOK AT IT!

Trader: I brought some liver!
Broker: Yeah, whatever. Let me see what else you have.
Trader: Thing is...
Broker: WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU THINKING?
