Author Topic: Direct Sandbag Delivery to underground magma forge via VERY deep pit?  (Read 4177 times)

Greetings,

my magma forge is about 60 z-levels underground.
Would it be possible to have sandbags dropped through a pit directly in a nearby area? Would they be damaged by the fall?

I think this is less a problem and more an expression of dwarven priorities.

There are two possible outcomes:

1: The sand bag explodes harmlessly, leaving you broke.

2: The sandbag stays intact and possibly kills someone.

Unfortunately, attempting to dump the sand bags will result in the sand being dumped on the ground and the empty bag tossed in the hole.

The only way to make getting sand to your magma furnace easier, I believe, is to drop some tiles of sand down to the level of the furnaces, and even then it's a crapshoot.

I'd say dig a speacial room just for the landing of sand with a locked door just in case, and drop a couple of tiles of sand via cutting supports...

But that's me...

EDIT: Once it's down there, it'll make infinate sand bags, right?

make the pit, but keep the top level (which should be sand) intact while you channel from the second level down until the last. Then setup a cave-in on the top sand floor that was left over and watch it drop toward the furnaces.

Building glass components for a pumpstack, I assume?

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Stop. Read my thread on my attempt at bringing the sand down to the magma forges first: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=83106

The cave-in idea won't work because of grass. Sand can only be gathered on tiles without grass (or moss if underground). However if you eat the grass then the soil type that gets revealed is whatever is native for that region (biome and underground layer). Conversely, this means you can 'create' sand right where you want by making some mud, waiting for moss to grow, eating that moss and hoping you have a sand tile show up (mod the raws to guarantee this) in that underground portion of your biome. My anecdotal evidence suggests the mud will have transmuted into whatever your surface layer's soil type is but there's no guarantee of that.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I was just about to suggest this. You don't have to channel the entire pit though, natural stone layers don't shatter when they collapse, but will punch through any tile without support underneath. Just dig a 55-floor up/down staircase with the adjacent plug tile path dug out, keeping the floors. Support the stone plug pillar with a... support... linked to a lever, then channel it out, and pull the lever. Should take a minute for the game to calculate all the floor punching, but the column plug should land on the first naturally supported tile and stay there.

I haven't played with this in a while, but I remember it was possible that the plug would change to a layer that matched it's final location, so a backup plan may be necessary.
Yeah I opted to suggest channeling instead because it takes less keystrokes/clicks. But hey, I'm no expert on cave-ins; had only one accident to learn from.

tried a 1x1 meeting hall on the blessed clump and trampling down the grass instead?

It transforms into the lowest soil layer.

You can define a sand collection zone on a sand wall as well, so if you drop a solid block of sand down rather than just a floor then it might work.  Or it might transmute while falling, into some other material.. cave ins seem like fairly obvious and mundane physics but there's a hell of a lot of magic behind them.
or under them, or somewhere in the vicinity anyway.

Here's what you do:

Build a normal furnace near the sand, set a job to collect sand there on repeat.  Have a stockpile nearby for the sand collector to deposit the sand in.  Down near the magma furnace, set another sand stockpile to take sand from the other stockpile.  That way, your haulers will be hauling sand down while one guy works on collecting sand and another can work on turning it into glass.

Just build a dirt road on it when grass grows.  Then you'll have furrowed sand.  (Unless it bugs out to something else.)
