Spacing Out
« on: May 04, 2011, 09:55:47 pm »

Lately I've been spacing out at the worst possible times. Especially when I've had a bad day. Typically I wouldn't be worried, but I almost got hit by a car a couple weeks ago (I walked onto the crosswalk of a busy road...then I jumped backwards as someone honked at me) and I got hit by a bike today. (Crossing a neighborhood street.)

Is there anything specific that could be causing these space-outs? All I can think of is possibly some dehydration (I am horrible at drinking water/liquids and often when I lie down and stand up a bit later my vision goes all blury and I get all dizzy for a second. Bad me!) or possibly because of social/emotional effects?

In other words, tips for paying attention to the earthly world? (Sometimes I space out deep in thought and other times I am just on auto-pilot....)

....That might be it. I've only been sleeping about 4-6 hours lately.
I'll have to try to go to sleep earlier I suppose.

That will do it.  Most health problems are caused by either lack of sleep, lack of physical activity, poor diet or substance and drug use (both legal and illegal).  So you should always start there.

Sounds like blood pressure but it could be anything, see a doctor.

I had a similar problem, it was low blood sugar... had no idea until I saw the doc.

Might be dehydration, depending on where you are. Drink more water, sleep more. That'll hopefully help.

Ohh gosh I have to listen in here too because I space out too and in more then one way.

One type of space out I sort of do, that I can't do anything about, is actually a learning disability where my brain will occasionally dump audiatory information (or rather... I sometimes won't hear something).

Anyhow often spacing out has to do with how you think about things and how intensely you do so. I am learning to drive and I have often concentrated so intensely on my spedometer that I have completely forgot I was driving. I also have a tendency to fanticise and I can do so vividly enough to override my senses.

So there is a good chance it is just how you do things that make you space out. Either by shutting off your brain, which saves energy, or by using your brain in the wrong areas, which keeps your brain occupied.

I do that ^ too, but I'm going to bet dimes for dollars that it's the lack of sleep.
