Speed up feature
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:00:02 pm »

For when your starting a fort or there's a lull in time, maybe a 2x-10x feature for speed?

The timing is based on your FPS when playing in fortress mode unpaused, so for an early fort just remove your FPS cap or set it higher.

That's weird. How do I remove my FPS cap?

My guess would be to set it some ridiculously high number. 5000 or so should do. Just remember that that means the computer will run it as fast as it can; likely far faster than you can handle.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

-Go into the Data folder.
-Go into the Init folder
-Open the init file.
-Change [FPS_CAP:100] to [FPS_CAP:0] to remove it, or to whatever maximum speed you want.

A better alternative would be to put [SPEED:0] in the dwarf raw.

Not really, because that's not speeding up the game. That's just changing how quickly dwarves move.

x2yzh9: The game runs as fast as it can run, or at the speed specified by the FPS cap if it's capable of hitting it... a "fast-forward" button would be a tad silly since, as I just said, the game is already running as fast as it can. The best we could ever have is a way to change the FPS cap in-game.

Well you could have a new method of simulation, where it skips pathfinding etc. This would be able to be used in certain circumstances.

I personally think that it's a bad idea though.

Can't you just use [SPEED:0]? It's basically fast forward mode.

No, because READ THE REST OF THE THREAD OR ELSE I WILL DECORATE A MICROLINE MUG WITH YOUR BONES.

Increasing the FPS cap in the init file might speed up the game, but only if it's not very slow already. DF generally goes as fast as it possibly can except on very small, very simple forts.

That's called "world generation".

[SPEED:0] is not fast forward, it's "attach jet engines to your dwarves and then alter the timestream around them so that they move at Mach 5 no matter what they're doing" and is thus cheating of the very vilest order unless you also go through and mod all existing creatures to also have speed 0. Of course, as elves are naturally faster than dwarves you'd be eliminating that balancing aspect from them and any other faster critter. Also, you would thereby eliminate most of the purpose of the agility stat, further throwing game balance off.

At that point you might as well mod in a reaction to give you free cotton candy and Legendary+5 everything for nothing.

It would be like world gen, as someone else said. So things would be stored all numerically. It would probably be more of a new game mode though, "emperor mode", where you control an empire.
