The rule for involentary commitment is 'Danger to themselves or others'.

My friend got commited on different occasions by:

1) Repeatedly walking into traffic (multiple motorists called 911)

2) His uncle waking up while my friend was standing over him with a knife (uncle had cancer, my friend was thinking of removing it for him)

3) Getting lost and pleading with stangers to help him when he was 3 blocks from home.

4) Most recently Having to have 2 batteries, 3 finger rings, a metal necklace, a few dollars in change, and a dildo (yes, a dildo...) surgically removed from his stomach; while in recovery he escaped from his room and stashed some hospital supplies into a nurses car, and tore up her registration/insurance papers (nurses car was unlocked...)

What did NOT get him commited:

1) Invisible little girls telling him the future, giant eyes in the sky watching him.

2) Believing that anything yellow is evil; from the Sun to plastic cups.

3) That all people with the same first name are the same person (All Johns are John the Baptist, all Als are Albert Einstein, etc.)

4) Giving away all his money, except for the money he swallowed.

He thought the sun was evil? Now I'm curious as to how he dealt with that.

In any case, Truean, I'm afraid I'll have to say that you shouldn't get involved with this. Your brother has to take care of himself, and by your own admission you have finals to worry about. Once you've graduated got a stable setup for yourself you should probably look into helping your brother, but right now you have to worry about yourself.

Even if youir brother is weird, how come his wife doesn't work?
She is supposed to be the one coping with it, not you. Anyway, you're studying, so you don't have time for this. Don't do anything until after your finals.

Possibly because she doesn't want to leave her children with her husband.

I feel for ya. I've had a similar (but somewhat better) situation in that my half-brother is active duty military and has been overseas much of the last ten years. Meanwhile his worthless soon-to-be-ex-wife was shacking up with various guys and ditching their daughter off on our grandfather (who has since passed away). Not much he could do about it while he was in Iraq, and I couldn't afford to take the daughter in. At least now he's home, is getting his shit stable and prepping himself for the custody battle.

Bad part is that a custody court is not going to look too highly on an active duty single soldier as a good choice. But hopefully it'll be a better one than a out-of-work, morbidly obese single mother that dumps her kid off somewhere and vanishes for two or three days at a time.  :-\

As difficult as it might be, if you want to do something, I'd talk to his wife first. Try *gently* to find out her thoughts on the situation. If she doesn't see a problem and/or is committed to staying with him, then there's not much to be done.  If she's looking for a way out, then you can see about finding help for her and the kids. Keep in mind that doing so is potentially opening yourself up to your brother's wrath if he thinks you're trying to split up his marriage (even if it NEEDS to be split up).

If he was fired, then he might very well qualify for unemployment.  There are lots of annoying exceptions, but being fired is actually better, as far as qualifying, than quitting.  They don't exactly TELL you this most times, but maybe helping him get the information and file the paperwork will be easier than other things - and then, at least for a while, you can hand him off to the department of labor.

Err... This may seem like a really, really weird question, but how did your brother swallow all of those things without choking to death, Kaenneth?
