[sigh]I can't really do much of anything in this.

Why should you do anything at all?  It sounds like your brother isn't just in a string of bad luck but has made conscious and deliberate bad decisions.  Don't get involved.

. . .

So, is this person actually insane, or has he just made a bunch of bad choices?  Don't impugn the mentally ill for someone else's irresponsibility >_>  If he's actually insane, you could look into getting him diagnosed and put away in a facility or on medication--provided that he actually is diagnosed with that degree of mental illness.  He, and his family, would probably be eligible for some state-based assistance.

However, you will not just be able to put him away, and I wouldn't suggest using it as a scare tactic.  I'm just saying this as someone who was threatened with institutionalization a year or so back, and looked into it: unless he goes willingly or demonstrates being a danger to himself or others, you won't be able to "take care of" him that way.

Tell him to put some work into it himself, if he's too lazy to work on getting his own welfare (let alone a job) leave him to his own devices, you're only enabling him. Get your degree and when you're more financially stable then maybe consider helping him.

You seem to not understand that welfare programs often refuse to give money to households if there's a man in the house.

Well, basically, if he's capable of holding a job then he's not getting state help.  Period.  His wife and children also probably won't get state help.  Period.

Well shit, he probably should try and get a job instead of mooching of his brother, but that may be impossible.

He should still try though. I would say demand he try and get a job or be in the process of trying before you help him.

So, he needs to be (as far as I know) either actively working or looking for a job to get state assistance--maybe, if even then.  State assistance is shaky and only getting shakier...

This is strange. Women make up more than half the workforce now, don't they?

... No.

Also, you may find this interesting.  And this.

And, from the US Census, the median pay gap:

The first two articles are just talking about men and women holding exactly the same jobs.  This image is referring to the pools in general, in opposition with each other.

EDIT: Oh, fuck it, read this, too.

This hasn't even gotten into the differing hiring rates in obese men and women, and loads and loads of other things.  Hint: If you are an obese woman, you are something like 40% disadvantaged compared to an obese man with the same qualifications.

I'm not trying to uphold this bullshit, but I am trying to explain why counting a woman as an "equal provider" basically doesn't work in many instances.

*Sigh* I was primarily worried for his kids but....

He might be a little nuts and has a lovely record of violent crimes. Nothing landing him in prison, yet, though. I sure as hell don't want to file the commitment papers, though I strangely enough know how in probate court. *shrugs* He might be insane; he might be an idiot. Who knows.

Look folks, the economy is rough out there and there isn't just an easy answer. I mean really.
"Get a job." Well that's kind of a no brainer isn't it? Common, give me some credit.

Either way, I'm in the middle of finals and really don't have time for this crap right now.

And in a lot of places, even a not quite minimum wage job is enough income to not qualify for assistance, even though that income is less than half the minimum amount required to put a roof over ones head and a non-starvation diet on the table.

Being poor is really horrific in the US. The only way to "live" on welfare is if you have an illegal and undocumented income. The only way my family survived was that my mother illegally used her student loans to pay rent and we got food from the grandparents garden, the animal feed store and by "gleening" the stuff left to rot in other peoples fields that the harvester machines missed.
