Overheating laptop?
« on: May 04, 2011, 02:17:48 pm »

How do you keep a laptop from overheating? How do you know when it is about to overheat? Not sure exactly what questions to ask, but I know this game has a reputation for melting CPUs.

When it's about to ovehet, the fan will spin like crazy, and if it overheat, the processor will shut down. You'll know that your proceesor is too hot with the noise. To avoid that, use the vacuum cleaner on your laptop exhaust, while it's off, every once in  while.

When using your laptop in bed, never keep the laptop on a pillow or directly in your ...well... lap.
(Since I'd rather improvise than buy) I made a small lap-desk from:
- a piece of plywood that used to be a shelf
-...to which I screwed and glued 4 short wooden legs that used to be a shovel handle.
It looks like crap, it's probably less comfy than, say, this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
... but I made it and that's important.
I have enough space for the laptop, the mousepad and the USB numpad, and by gluing extra bits of felt to the rubber bumps that were already under the laptop, it's sitting higher, gets better ventilation and I avoid overheating.

(Or you could follow RF's advice. )

Now, If your laptop is overheating abnormally all by itself, while sitting on the table you may need to clean it.
Or, if it's a supercompact slim netbook... meh... that's how they roll.

if you use the forum search function you will see where we have discussed this before and I did a little write up on the best cooler I have ever run. My laptop is a desktop replacement with SLI video and would shut itself off while playing ARMA 2, but now stays below 102 C.

EDIT: also, there is a great free program called Core Temp that will monitor your temps for you. Good luck and protect those nards.

double edit: because I have way too much free time today and I want to help http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0014GVZS0/ref=asc_df_B0014GVZS01534713?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B0014GVZS0

Thank you. I searched and did not see this. I have one of these (different model/company) and it didn't seem to keep my motherboard from melting. I honestly don't seem to know what to do in operational terms. I bought a very expensive laptop that was top of the line to handle the massive amount of crap I do. Doesn't seem like it worked.

Will look into possibly purchasing this though.

Low-tech solution: Sack of ice wrapped in a towel. A board will avoid overheating from extra insulation, but not the laptop's own processes. Ice, even wrapped in a layer of insulation, will keep it relatively cool in most situations.

No overheating = good
Possibility of shorting out = bad.

Hence the towel. It won't soak through unless the ice melts and then the bag ruptures, and even then it'll soak down more than up.

If I am using my laptop on my knee or bed... I place a book under it so I don't obstruct the fan.
