I'm Building a Computer!
« on: May 04, 2011, 11:01:22 am »

And I need your help. You see, I've never built a computer before and I think I'm doing pretty good. I just want you guys to check over my list of things to buy and tell me if there are any problems. Note that I already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse that I will reuse with my new computer.

I'm hoping to stay around that price, if possible, and if any of you have suggestions for cheaper parts then please tell me.

EDIT: I'll probably need cables, but can anyone tell me which ones?

You need a standard power cord, unless the case comes with one. And you'll probably need a couple SATA HD controller cables unless they're bundled with the motherboard. Cables are cheap so you might as well buy some just in case.

Your monitor has DVI jacks, right?

I assume the CPU comes with heatsink and cooling fan already attached?
If you want to be fashionable then an SSD HD (in addition to the regular one) to put the boot partition on. That'll add another 150 or so to your bill though.

I don't see blue led lights on your list. You need blue led lights.

Is the power supply prefitted in the case? If it is, I'd recommend getting a seperate case and power supply. It can be irritating to have your case arrive only to realise that, oh no, this power supply doesn't really work and you try to fit everything in and it runs out of juice etc.

Either that or he's smart and not using Windows... there are other things, you know...

though if that were the case, I'd recommend that he use hardware that's at least 6 months old - it takes about that long for an open-source driver to be available.

Yeah, its hard to tell if that PSU is going to be good enough for what you want. It seems a little weak, and it doesnt tell you how many amps its putting out on the 12v rail. The last bit is really, REALLY important, if your PSU isnt giving enough amps, it will not run your video card.

When you are looking at the specs of a PSU, under output you should see something like this:

Output
    +3.3V@30A, +5V@28A, +12V@60A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@3.0A

The bit in bold (ignore the link.) is the important bit, the more amps you have on there, the better as it will be able to handle bigger video cards. That spec is arguably more important than how many watts the PSU is. If you arent putting out enough amps, it doesnt matter how many watts it pumps out, it still wont handle what you want it to.

You also want to make sure you know what kind of connections it has

1 x Main connector (20+4Pin) <-- connects to mb
1 x 12V(4/8Pin) <-- connects to mb
8 x peripheral <-- connects to non sata stuff (ide hard drives, dvd drives, cd roms)
8 x SATA <-- connects to sata drives (obviously)
2 x Floppy <-- again, obvious
4 x PCI-E <-- generally connects to your video cards. Some of the bigger cards require 2 of these for one card. That detail SHOULD be on the details of your video card.

The PSU is one of the most important parts of your computer and shouldnt be skimped out on and you should make sure you get the right one for your needs.

A power cord like this? Will cables like these do?

Yes, my monitor has a DVI jack.

It doesn't say that my CPU comes with a heatsink and cooling fan, can you recommend any?
I might look into a SSD HD as well, but I will probably have to sell some of my stuff to help afford it.

Blue LED lights come with the case.

I'll be using Ubuntu. If I don't like Ubuntu then I'll get Windows 7.

Is the power supply prefitted in the case? If it is, I'd recommend getting a seperate case and power supply. It can be irritating to have your case arrive only to realise that, oh no, this power supply doesn't really work and you try to fit everything in and it runs out of juice etc.

How does this case and this power supply look?

As I said, I'm gonna use Ubuntu.

I'll be getting this computer in about a years time (hopefully less, if I can find myself a job before then), so I shouldn't have to worry about the parts being six months old.

I decided that my avatar wasn't memorable enough, so I changed it.

Do you think that the PS I linked to earlier in the post is good enough?

If you are ever planning to run that card in SLI, no, since that card takes ~220 watts its self, recommends a 550w PSU and takes 2x6pin connections, which that PSU has 1x6pin and 1x6+2 (basically 8 pin). If not, Id say it should be ok, but Id get probably 600+ watts to be safe. On the amps side, it might be fine, but I cant be 100% certain, since the video card doesnt say how many amps it needs (nor does a quick google search). Also, if you plan on doing any overclocking, get a bigger PSU.

Basically, its a good enough PSU to get you started, but I recommend something a bit bigger. With no SLI I would go for at least 600 watts. If you are planning on running SLI, Id go for at least 800 watts for dual SLI and probably 1000 watts for triple SLI.

Btw, great choice in cards, benchmarking puts out some impressive stats for a similar system to yours. Crysis Warhead at 1900x1200 with 4xAA and 16XAF put it at about 50+ fps. MW2 pumps out like 250+ fps. I just prefer EVGA for Nvidia cards, since their warrenty kicks some severe ass, but thats just personal preference really.

I won't be running the card in SLI, and if I did I would probably buy a new PSU anyway. How does this PSU look?

About the card, I didn't really put much thought into choosing it. I knew that I wanted one of the GTX series, but not which one so I simply went for the most expensive one I could afford.

Yeah, that one looks a lot better. More power, good amps, and more connectors. :)

As for video cards, higher price is a good way to get a base idea for what you want, but not always the best policy, but in this case, it worked out well for ya. :)

I notice for your PSU you're linking from NewEgg. Do they ship to the UK these days?

A quick Google search tells me that they don't. I'll get one from this site instead.

If you're getting this in a years time, the price and availability will be very different probably for the better. Off the top of my head there's a whole new generation of Intel processors coming up called Ivy Bridge which should be significantly better around the same price.

Any idea on when this is coming out? Wikipedia won't tell me.

Closest I can find is 'late 2011-early 2012'. It's looking like it'll be about a 30 percent performance boost over the current intel line ('Sandybridge')
