So, yeah, who else has heard about people actually getting gaps put into their teeth to match the "trend"?

I’ve written about the gap-toothed trend here two times before (here and here) because I have a gap between my front teeth. Finally, I am organically on trend! The other day, I was actually wondering if, because of all the famous people rocking a gap between their teeth—from models to actresses—some people would actually get a gap put between their teeth. Sure enough, the Wall Street Journal reports folks are doing just that.

After the death of his father, fashion designer David Delvin had a dentist put a gap put between his teeth because: “It was a metaphor for the separation I was feeling.” Alrighty then! The Journal goes on to speculate that the spacey smile is coveted these days as it provides a unique “character” alternative to the overly airbrushed, seemingly “perfect” images that proliferate throughout pop culture. Lindsey Wixson, Anna Paquin, and Georgia Jagger are all name-checked as leaders in the gap-toothed movement.

One young model, 19-year-old Ashley Smith, says her gap is her “calling card.” Since beauty trends, these days, seem to creep downwards, who knows how long it will be before the 11-year-old who used to get braces will be pleading for her parents to buy her diastema (that’s what they call the gap) for Christmas? Personally, I don’t mind mine. I’ve certainly had a few dentists ask me, “Don’t you want to close that?” I’ve always replied no. Without it, I couldn’t whistle like a bird or spit water several feet in a thin stream. And then what would I do?

This just scares me. It's WEIRD.

Anyone else sit there and wonder if the rest of the world is absolutely nuts?

I know, right? It's the perfect fashion accessory--storage for all those little knick-knacks without the unsightly handbags.

Or maybe it's a metaphor for the empty hole in my heart. Or a non-metaphor for my f**king heart being squished up against my ribcage.

It also has the side effect of giving me cleavage. Maybe I'll get a gig as a model for Victor's Secret.


I'm all for destigmatizing defects, but c'mon people....deliberately causing defects? Other than Goths and the body-mod subculture, I just don't see that catching on.

Cause I've known Goths that would bleach themselves to look albino, get special contacts to mimic heterochromia (different-colored eyes), etc.

 That world has gone bonkers far before this. Heck, this is relatively tame and might make people more conscious of dental hygiene.

I see. I give you right on skin-bleaching, but I do withhold that the dangerous lenses are nothing especially goth, all people do it. But yeah, I also get you were only providing examples. But still.

I'd put something that extreme in the body-mod category. Along with the people that do deliberate amputations. Seriously, WTF?

And wait, colored contacts are considered something goth and fairly extreme? o_O

And I don't know, why is this any different than people who get their braces to remove the gaps? Or straighten their teeth?

I guess I don't really get it - if its already okay as a society to do terrible things to our mouths so that they look good, why isn't it okay to, you know, do stuff to our mouths so that we look good?

Yeah, there are some serious psychological issues that can lead to people getting amputations.  Also yakuza.
