Glacial worldgen
« on: May 03, 2011, 06:18:14 pm »

I created a world using the glacial worldgen (modded so that seeds weren't used, as the kind of place I was looking for wasn't in the seeded world); when I made the fort, I found that no animals ever invaded. Is that because all the animals are dead, none of the animals are found in my area, or is it something else?

Elves and humans also happened to die out in the entire world, in case that's relevant.

Civs died out because of no habitats available. As in, no trees for the damn hippies. Same with humans, no plains for them.

A lot of animals probably died out too, because the lack of variety (Large biomes with dwarves/gobbos still hunting).

But having no animals at all? Not even polar bears or ice wolves?

I'm looking to generate another world such that humans and elves survive, and such that I get the kind of starting place I want...let's see if I can do it.

Try having a few taigas and a grassland. That'll do it.

Walruses and a few others will spawn on a glacier, but it seems not very often.  You'll have time with no beasties, this is normal.

Is there a known way to change glacial so that nearly every creature stays alive and so that elves and humans don't die out?

Alternatively, is there a way to make it so that the line between glacial and non-glacial is about halfway across the map instead of 4 lines from one side?

Make everyone settle in glaciers, and make animals spawn there. Even pandas. Make some type of bambo tree for them.

You could edit the raws so that ALL civs can start out in glacial biomes.

Or you could just edit the world gen parameters to add taigas and tundras. If you want to make sure everything is still snowy, edit the max temperature down, and add in higher rain chance so it snows more often.

Figured out how it works; apparently the way the original glacial makes sure that there is a line between glacier and non-glacier is that everywhere has the same base temp. I set the base temp to -50 instead of -100, which pushes the line between glacier and non-glacier further from the edge.

Let's see if I can find what I need still...

In the entity_default.txt you can add GLACIER to the starting location of any civ, should be straightforward to figure out once you see it.  You can also add glacier to any creature to enable them to spawn there.  But, dwarves can freeze to death on glaciers (allegedly, never happened to me but I rarely embark there) so some creatures may die shortly after entering the map.

Hrm. While looking for a place where I can trade with all races, I came across another problem.

I've been able to find volcanoes that are high enough, but the magma pipe sometimes stops 1 layer below the ground instead of going all the way to the top of the volcano. Is there a way to either correct that or see that from the embark map?
