My cat is infected >_<
« on: May 03, 2011, 03:09:45 pm »

I embarked with helmet snakes and a few other things, including cats. I noticed one of my cats has miasma coming from him, and has all of the helmet snake syndromes. I keep pasturing the cat, but it keeps wandering off.

What do I do? I don't have a butcher yet, and I need the kittens to kill vermin.

UPDATE! The cat is dead, but a few other creatures are requesting diagnosis and are hurt, but do not show symptoms yet. I hope my GCS isn't going to die. I want an army of spiders

You could probably dump the cat in a graveyard when it dies. One outside will prevent miasma from forming.

Do you pasture your cats with the helmet snakes? If so, then overcrowding might cause them to fight.

You did embark with at least one rope right?

Set up a restraint and tie the cat...

Unless it's someones pet.

Nothing is pastured except for the cat. It's outside, but keeps wandering off.

Your animals are too cramped, and get violent. This gets really bad when helmet snake venom gets involved. Make sure they have some room so they don't bite your dwarves.

Yeah, my only male cave croc just succumbed to infection. I hope the eggs were fertilized in time. I think the GCS was bit too.  :'(

All the animals were horded around the wagon, so that might be it. I made a giant (50x50+) meeting area. I hope they don't get anymore of my animals.

You could pit all your helmet snakes. Even if they bite each other, they're immune to their own venom.

No wonder all my piglets began loosing feet and ears and bleeding all over the place when I penned them up with the water buffaloes.

I suspect the pastured cat wandered because it saw something (vermin) to react to.  I've experimented with putting beasts in 1x1 pastures.  Dogs stay put until either they see an enemy or a dwarf enters their square.  Either 'releases' them from their pasture until they are replaced into it.

If you ever have to deal with such a thing again, I'd suggest building walls around an outdoor area like this:

X is wall, # is pasture, _ is open space

XXX
X#X
XX_X
XX_X

Then pasturing the cat.  The shape of the walls will prevent the cat from spotting vermin immediately.  Once the cat is pastured, close off the pasture:

XXX
X#X
XXX

And the poisoned beast can just rot there.  Course, this won't work if the critter isn't a carnivore.

I have 3 cats. One of them just died from a snake bite.

I hate trappers, so I need to use cats. Don't worry, I throw kittens down a volcano once the population gets too high :))
