Some questions about genetics
« on: May 03, 2011, 11:29:38 am »

If I have say, a caste of dwarves and a caste of humans, will the creatures born from a union between them be more likely to be dwarf like in stature?

Castes are like genders, and the parents do not influence the caste. You can only change the rarity of caste, no fancy "genetics" stuff yet.

Genes don't affect castes yet. Like -Deon- said, it's like boy or girl (Actually that's how boy/girl works, but whatever).

Genes only affect traits now, I think. Copper skin dwarves (Like greeks) are probably going to give birth to copper skin beardlings.

Nope.

Castes mean nothing.

You can inherit traits like hair color and skin color, but that's it. A dog can give birth to a cat, if castes are like that.

Urist mcblueface is a blue dwarf he is of a cast that has blue skin

Urist Mcnormalface is a Human, he is of a caste that does not have blue skin

Can there baby be a Human with blue skin inherited from one parent

Caste does not mean anything.

Castes A and B can have a child of caste C. Traits that caste C can't have will not be passed down. He will have something else then.

If you define a color of the skin specific to a caste, the baby will use the skin color only possible for its caste.

I am not sure where did the people get the "creatures inherit color of the skin" and things like that in the first place: because you can easily make males and females to have different skin colors alltogether, so it wouldn't make sense (and it is how it works: I am pretty sure that those are random).

Purple woman+White (Bleach) man= randomised child of caste.

There are two genetic tokens that you can put on creatures, but they're very poorly understood and seemingly only good for two things, Color and Appearance.  Castes aren't in there, but probably should.

These genetic markers are not present in the basic raws, but can be found along with the rest of the raw tokens in the string dump.  I do mean to do some experimentation with them eventually, tho.

If you define colours for each caste individually, even if they're the exact same definitions copied and pasted, each will be recorded individually in the genetics. I do this in the My Little Pony mod and I'll usually get civs with, say, every male unicorn having an ochre coat and carmine and puce striped hair, every female pegasus will have a pearl coat, lime green wings and fuchsia hair, and so on. I must admit, I haven't checked children born during dorf mode, though, so maybe that's different.
