Dwarf Fortress on Russian language
« on: May 03, 2011, 09:35:40 am »

Sorry, write through google translate.
Hi, I want to tell you that in Russia, too, playing Dwarf Fortress.
But such people is very small, the problem is that the game is very much an English text is very difficult to translate.
I hope that the Russian translation to appear in the game

Generally in Roguelike we are strange people and closed ))
It is not strange, but we have a popular minecraft =))

P.S. Thank you all, I'm sorry that I write through the translator, I really do not know much English.

Unfortunately, requests for alternate language versions of Dwarf Fortress have been requested before, but the problem is that Toady is very unlikely to actually do something like that in the foreseeable future.

Toady keeps much of the code related to Interface hidden from modders, so it is impossible to properly mod even through hacks without causing a lot of problems.

Toady also isn't going to do it himself any time soon, because he generally changes so much of the code so regularly.

While it would be great to have some sort of modular text in the game that allows players to swap out languages, or just plain have different flavor text for different mods, that requires starting from the desire to make this text modular, and that wasn't what occurred at the start.

Очень много текста игры "зашито" в .exe, так что это очень маловероятно в обозримом будущем.

A lot of the game text is hardcoded in the .exe, so it is highly unlikely any time soon.

Там еще и случайна генерация текста  :(
Надо изучать английский язык.

There's also the random generation of the text: (
Need to learn English.

It's always good to learn english, not just for game :).

And actually there's almost no "generated" text, I even know the files where to look for the most of non-interface text, but I doubt they would accept russian characters.

It's possible if you change the tileset to Russian characters, and edit the text files so you get Russian words when the text is displayed onscreen.

Wouldn't that just be English (poorly) written with Cyrillic?

# Core54, TRANSLATION SUPPORT, (Future): Announcements and other interface text needs to come out of the game and be placed in an editable format to support any potential translators, though current font implementations restrict this process at the moment if non-ASCII characters are to be involved.

Practically speaking, though, you're right that it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Well, learning DF is difficult per se, but learning it without any proper knowledge of English... now that's a challenge worthy of a real dwarf. :-)

Seems to be the way with things on this forum; if an invention doesn't involve death by magma then you know someone's going to go out of their way to make sure it does involve death by magma... then it gets acknowledged as being a great invention.

I don't think one needs to know English very well to play DF. He would have difficult to read the wiki, and that's it.

Speaking of Russia, I'd like to see vodka implemented in Dwarf Fortress.

I now have three in the morning, I sit with a wiki and an interpreter, trying to figure out how to play. :)
I even found a video in English, where they show how to learn to play.

Well, the fact that in Russia they drink only vodka, sex with bears, and we have all the cold and snow, it's not true))
In Moscow now has come the summer.

I just put a CP866-based version of the default tileset up on the wiki.

Spoiler: image (click to show/hide)

Hopefully I didn't screw up the characters too much. :P

So it is warm in Moscow, but the rest of Russia is still cold and snowy, and you are all still drinking vodka and having sex with bears?
