I believe ya can just go as close as ya can to it, then spam "surroundings" on everyone, and eventually, someone should tell ya about it, have not tried it myself due to not having many successful adventurers that do NOT get gored in the face by their first night creature or something (I have bad luck with anything with a horn...and it seems half the randomly genned creatures I see have them.) but its what everyone else reccommends for finding you're old forts.

look for your main hall they would usually hang around there. if there was some time before departure then they up and gone.
Going back to an old fort can lead to reclaiming it as your adventurer then using the incoming migrants as expendable companions..

Go to a fortress and recruit some soldier companions. They'll scare off bogeymen and will do a better job than any teeny peasants.

Maybe take a screen shot of the region map, on the embark screen, then look for similar geographic features near your fort sites, that match up with your adventure mode revealed map?
Whenever I make a new fort, just made notes of fort site on world map, and nearby human/elf settlements

Immediately after abandonment, you can hit "Pllay Now" to start right at the fort.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

I meant the night creatures you kill for quests, and occasionally....my companions running off to chase elephants or something else that will rip someone in half in a few seconds.
