Come on people, it's "dwarves" not "dwarfs". Didn't anyone read Tolkien?

Come on people, its "dwarfs" not "dwarves". Doesn't anyone watch timelessly classic movies.

Obviously Toady did. That's why you start with 7 dwarves when making a new fortress. That start just got off to a REALLY bad start, what with all the dwarves being male, and no other dwarves in the world. If it wasn't for that female adventure joining them, they'd have toiled away in making their tiny fortress, occsionally mining gold and turning it into furniture and whatnot, until they died.

I'd have started world gen over if I had a starting party all the same sex in a world where dwarf civ had died out though.

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

I'd still say it's closer to middle earth than snow white.

That's a strange spelling, most people round here tend to go for "tree-hugging hippy scum".

Dwarves: The modern fantasy creatures.
Dwarfs: Humans with  dwarfism
Dwarrows: The historical fantasy creatures.
Dorfs: Dwarf fortress residents

Dwarrows: The historical fantasy creatures.
Dorfs: Dwarf fortress residents

Exactly: dwarfs are short humans, dwarves are bearded fantasy creatures that live in mines.

I'm not sure why this is still an issue. The game uses "dwarves" and "elves", therefore we should use the same nomenclature when talking about the game. There is no argument to be had here.
Presumptuous nonsense. You can call them whatever you want, doesn't matter if the game uses it.

Also @ Op; this is clearly not Middle-Earth.

And I think Pratchett is a much cooler author than Tolkien. :P

this discussion is pertaining to the use of said words on the wiki, not which is cooler. if that's the discussion you guys want to have, move this to another subforum

I think the use of "ves" is the more commonly used term here
Dwarves and Elves is how it should be on the wiki

Dwarrows: The historical fantasy creatures.

Don't you mean Dvergr ("Duergar")?

I agree with this on the principle of common usage, but not on the principle of Tolkien fanboyism.

there's also ingame usage, which i think is more pertinent to define canon than common usage. why was this revived again?

Due to the fact that it is Dwarves in-game it should also be so on the wiki, not because Tolkein said so.  Both are entirely acceptable for everyday situations and which you use is up to you.

Exactly, it should be "Dwarves" in your everyday lives because Toady said so.   8)

It's dorfs. What's this "v" nonsense? That looks awfully pointy. You know what else is pointy? An elf's ears, and we all know what elvenkind is good for: nothing.
