...15610 units of water in ONE BUCKET?
« on: May 02, 2011, 04:02:41 pm »

I'm not kidding. I have a pond that needs filling, and the mayor is going to fill it up.

She has a bucket of water, the contents of which are listed as follows:

water [9]
water

Okay, from that point, I could be like "Well, 10 units is the biggest amount of water a bucket can fit, after all..."

And under that it says "water [15610]"

Uh...what? Yeah. The mayor is moving slow as fuck and the bucket apparently weighs 28742 Urists.

That's gonna make a HELL of a splash.

I don't know how to take one. Anyway, update. He just put it in the pond...it was filled up to 2/7.

This seems like an inefficient and wasteful way to carry water...

Aw. I was waiting (Among all the other viewers) for the whole fortress to flood. Maybe even the map!

That was a rip-off.

Yeah, I felt disappointed too...It was a three-z-level pit, and I figured it'd fill up, and then a geyser of water would erupt and knock the mayor out of is xpig tail shoesx.

Known bug.  I have a similar (but less dramatic) issue with hospital buckets that keep having "stagnant water (9)" left in them.  Every fall I make a dump zone near the trade depot and dump all of the "stagnant" buckets.  When the caravan comes, I mark the buckets for trading.  This is the only way I've found to get dwarves to dump the extra water out of a bucket.  I've started forbidding any buckets like this I find, so they don't get used for milking/lye making, because if they do the milk/lye will be unusable for anything.

Also, obviously, magma avalanches and tsunamis weren't exactly a contingency covered in the mission briefing.
I can assure you that Ardentdikes is not the first fortress to be flooded with magma. What's unusual is that we actually meant to flood it with magma.

Prepare a trade depot and the bucket around an adamantine spire. Breach hell. Empty bucket. Drown hell. Yes, demons don't breathe, but good god would it be great. Also prepare for the lagfest of your life. You may want to back up your save file.

Bonus: Use the irrigated slade to grow plump hellmets.

Forbidding the water contents of the bucket, dumping the bucket, and then reclaiming the bucket will cause the water/contents to be spilled out on the ground at some point. Its useful for sorting buckets out after making soap.

What about the content of a jug, can you get rid of it? This method doesn't work, I tried.

Er, I've tried that specific trick but it never worked - could you record a movie demonstration and post it on DFMA?

What did work for me was forbidding the water contents and then ordering the buckets to be hauled to the trade depot. Conveniently, this can be used to empty any sort of container - bins, barrels, bags, buckets, and any other containers whose names may or may not begin with the letter "b".

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I had more luck by forbidding the water and ordering the container to be dumped.  They haul the barrel to the dump, and leave the Wolf Blood as a puddle on the ground.
