Atmospheric? Ambient?
« on: May 02, 2011, 03:30:10 pm »

Hello all,
I have a craving for a certain kind of game.
Something relaxing, something dreamy, something atmospheric. Probably a casual game, because I don't know if there are any linear sort of games that have the sort of psychedelic, languid feel that I crave - but anyway, anything that fits with those 5 adjectives, please send my way! :)

I play Aurora while listening to jazz.  Does that count?  :P

Aquaria - http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/
It's not psychedelic but it is very atmospheric and the music is both dreamy and relaxing(the bosses aren't though)

"An Untitled Story".
Within a Deep Forest. <-- important
Seiklus.
Knytt.  Knytt Stories.

All of the above are freeware, small downloads, (mostly) casual, super atmospheric, and very good.  The top two are especially awesome.

...The only other one that comes immediately to mind is Okami.

Umm, a little old, but Osmos and flOw maybe? I think they both cost money now that I think about it, but flOw (and maybe Osmos) has free flash versions/ripoffs floating around.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Old versions?  I used to play flOw back when it was free.

Oh hey, got beaten to it. Seconding this regardless. It has a really stunning world coupled with awesome music and neat metroidvania gameplay. Probably the game that fits the bill the most.

That aside, I'll also recommend Braid. The atmosphere and general mood is very relaxing, although since it's a puzzle game toying with temporal mechanics you might just find it kind of frustrating at points. I know I did.

Osmos can be pretty relaxing, and its pretty cheap I seem to remember.

What you need is Knytt, then Knytt stories, then within a deep forest. The guy who makes those games knows what atmosphere is!

The Polynomial is pretty sweet. It costs money, but shooting pac men in psychedelic fractal space generated from your music collection is worth it. Well, for me at least.

I think there's a free demo on steam.

Aether, which seems to fit the bill and is also free. I was going to recommend Dyson, which was free, but it appears to now be called Eufloria and cost money. (free demo though)

Cloud
Freeware, with emphasis on casualness and dreamy atmosphere.
The gameplay is almost nonexistent, you just end up flying through clouds and relaxing.
