Dragon Civ
« on: May 02, 2011, 01:57:04 pm »

Hi guys I'm trying to work on making a dragon civ in place of dwarves but I seem to be having a lot of trouble making a new world since it either rejects them all until a message comes up asking if I want to stop or the program errors and closes down. I'd like to keep the dwarves as an NPC faction if possible but if it's a problem I'll remove them though some advice on what files need editing would be nice. Any way here are the files.

First of all, I'd recommend not placing them in entity_default and creature_standard.

As long as the file is well-formed, entity_dragon and creature_dragon should work

Also, be sure not to double the object names.  Your dragon should be called something like CREATURE:DRAGON_CREATURE and the entity ENTITY:DRAGON_CIVILIZATION.  One problem you may be experiencing is that both objects are named DRAGON_CIVIL... not all object types can share names, and it is bad practice in general.

I still have much to learn. :D Then again I stopped working on these things like 6 months back so I couldn't even really remember what I was doing at the time which is why I came here to get some help. I'll go try those suggestions out quick to see if it helps.

You might want to make them humanoids, but it's up to you.

Why for?
--------
On the up side the game doesn't crash but it still keeps rejecting all the maps it tries to make so something is still wrong it seems.  >_<

Seems a lil odd for a group of quadrupeds the size of an apartment building (Probably bigger) to form a civilization. Just sayin'.

Well I guess you probably have a point there but I'm mostly just trying to get them to spawn right now and worry about details later. Do I need to increase the number of savannas in the world_gen maybe? If so what should I enter?

Oh hey I finally got them to work after turning starting biome to mountain. Not entirely sure what this will mean considering kobolds and dorfs have the same thing but I guess I'll find out soon. :D

Kobolds use caves. And they die a lot during world gen from starvation.

Dwarves and dragons won't compete too much, as dwarves don't spam children like humans.

I'm curious, what does your QUADRUPED_GRASP body set up look like. Also have you looked into your errorlog text file for any little hitches you might have missed?

I just realized two things. 1. For the Win and F___ the World have the same initials. 2. They have the same meaning in Dwarf Fortress.

I used this  for the grasp thing. Also I don't know how to use the error log. :D

Open your DF folder. There should be a text file called errorlog or something like that. Open it and locate the error. Consider deleting everything and regenning--the errorlog can get full of pathing errors fairly quickly.

Also, megabeast civs can be troublesome. If they're genning, that solves my main problem, but still.

Yes they genned and they seem to be behaving fine though I'll probably switch them over to bipedal forms with human sizes. Likely going to get rid of the breathweapon too even if it's kind've hilarious seeing them use it on critters that annoy them. The immunity to fire/firebreath will stay though and they'll have tougher hides than regular civvies.

Alright. Sounds good. Having fire breath (Normal) would be fine, but don't make them go nuts.

Forgot about regular firebreath I suppose that'll work as a replacement for the dragon version. How do I go about making them have skin more akin to scales anyways? Might just give them adamant-level as adults and weaker for kids.
