God damnit now I have to do this, since I recently figured out just how to make this work. However it will be grindingly difficult, require a shite-ton of magma-safe floor grates, pumps, bridges and mechanisms, every room do have a natural stone pillar every 3 tiles in every orthogonal direction, and will STILL be gratingly slow to use.

Why not just have a ductwork level beneath/above each level of fortress to save on pumps?

Well, I've found that a very simple clever way to fill a drain a chamber with magma without leaving little pools of 1/7 magma all over, taking forever to evaporate and blocking the way to goblinite is to channel out most of the floor and cover it with magma-safe grates, then use pump-generated pressure to make the magma rise up into the room. Once the room is cleansed, killing the pressure lets the magma fall again, provided it has somewhere to go, such as a relief drop that opens in the room below. The only problem is that without a huge amount of space and magma to facilitate the flow, it goes more slowly then simply filling the room from above.

I suppose I could use a quick magma-drop method, but to me there's something sadistically poetic about magma bubbling up through the floor to burn the occupants. I already have a design of sorts in my head, but it needs sorting and testing.

A retracting bridge over a room of magma. First gobbo who steps on the pressure plate at the end sends the rest to their doom. :)

Not to spread it around too much, but this thread was asking for it.

Well, I did once make a canal trap. Only one, long route into the fort, and after I knew everyone was inside, I just pull the lever. Recovering the bodies was a bit of a pain, as the water simply drained down the side of the mountain and back to the river.

As for my current defenses, I have 200 Serrated disks between me and the surface, over a 4 Z level pit. For my amusement, I set up a staircase leading back to the upper level in the middle of the trap, so that any "Survivors" Can go through another 100 disks to get away. The trap path is also not straight. I call it the red room for good reason ^_^

If by some miracle they do get past all that I have a small number of cage traps, and if all else fails, they need to deal with my inverse tower. 2 Z levels tall with fortifications all around, the staircase dropping anyone off right in the middle of it. Trying to figure out a way to set it for a cave in trap however as a final answer.

I've got a siege-breaker superweapon (dodge trap catwalk) that has so far killed two goblins and three dwarves, that's fairly dwarfy I think? I suspect it needs re-engineering... or basic safety procedures, or something.

Magma corridor.

I was playing fortress defense, and was having loads of tigermen and frogmen riding giant desert scorpions sieging at the same time.

I create a looong labyrinthine corridor, rely it to the local volcano via lever-pullable iron doors, then put fortifications so the magma can take the shortest path through the labyrinthine walls and trap invaders trying to flee to the entrance, since there was only one path.

I did however, forget to laugh maniacally as the magma burned them.

my Beastmaster.
a single legendary swordsdwarf with steel weaponry and armour.
and 50+ war dogs.if he ever tantrums in the middle of a battle...even better!

Thinking of doing this myself. Except with adamantine equipment. And war grizzlys. And war elephants.

My army includes over 50 dwarfs. each has an adamantine weapon and some armor (im working on getting them fully decked out). There is AT LEAST two weapon lords in each squad, and they've gone 4 sieges without loosing a single member to battle.

I'm personally debating the logistics of an auto-drowner + mist generator.  In theory, my fort will have a large water reservoir atop it, some 3, 5, or 7 Z's high and probably 19x19 since my footprint is usually 21x21 and it needs walls.  Water is pumped in from the nearby river, through an above-ground aqueduct, and into the reservoir, where short pump stacks inside the reservoir itself make sure it's filled.  This is done by placing two pumps atop each other and then a windmill atop them, like so:
Code: [Select]
MMM
 %%
 %%
+++++
Placing this inside the water tower, I only need my aqueduct to reach the floor of the reservoir, and then the internal pumps will pull water up one level, which will create a void on the level below which the aqueduct will instantly refill, thus allowing a somewhat slow but very easy setup and low maintenance filler.

The front of my fort will consist of a construct bridge, made from floor and not actual bridge, with pits on either side.  Normally, the reservoir will fill to capacity and then let the water out through the top, which insures that the reservoir will always be full before it lets off the excess water into the out-pour.  This normal out-pour courses through the fortress creating a mist generator, dorfbath, hospital water source, hydro reactor, etc.

However, at the onset of an attack, preferably trigger by a pressure plate on the narrow bridge, the reservoir will instantly open several hatches on its lowest level, letting every Z level of water above it rush out (possibly pressurized and/or pressure nullified for perfection) which will push any invaders off the bridge and drown/crush/impale them in the pit below.  Once killed, the waterlogged corpses and loot will be pushed by the flowing water, over a horizontal floor grate drain which should collect all the loot in one convenient location inside my defenses.

The activation of this trap will shut off my water, and the mist generators and running flow will cease.  Once the invaders are defeated, the hatches should automatically close, the reservoir will refill, and the ecstatic-inducing flow of water will resume.  This feature can, and will, be used as a FB defense mechanism as well, by letting the water drain down into the caverns.  It will create a soothing bath for any soldiers, cleansing them of any FB toxins as they return.  As a safety measure, if the water is not running, a pressure plate will detect the lack of water and will shut the door, thus only allowing soldiers to return from the cavern if they're properly cleaned first.  The same will likely be true of the main gate as well, because dwarves won't wipe their feet unless it's done violently, and I'll probably make some measures to wash through my butcher area as well, since I've observed butchers to sometimes create blood on the ground.  Besides, it'll just be cool to have a butcher area with tile floors and drain outlets!

I hypothesize that the most dwarven defense is a dwarf.

I mean, how much more dwarven can you get than a dwarf?
