What are your most dwarven defences?
« on: May 01, 2011, 11:28:21 pm »

Mine would have to be a squad of 3 champions. They repelled at least 14 goblin ambushes and a stone forgotten beast.

The most dwarven one that I'm thinking of is a way to weaponise FB blood...

Mine is pretty new. A 10-dwarf squad of legendary miners. They single-handedly fended off 3 consecutive ambushes with only their picks and the clothes on their backs. There have so far been no deaths or major injuries.

None.

Yeah, it doesn't really work that well.

My first ever defense was a giant water reservoir leading to a very long and narrow tunnel which would be opened when enemy gobbos came so I could give them a nice bath before getting everything icky with their blood.

This was actually before I figured out how to make a military, but it worked so well that I never even bothered with one.

Fort self destruct mechanism. If I can't have it, then neither shall they! Bwhahahaha!

How do you build one without copious amounts of magma (and thus lag)?

My personal favorite? The time I covered the map with Weapon traps with superior quality mechanisms. and each trap had 1 wooden spike in it.

Channel around your fort except for a single square that keeps the fort up. Order a miner to channel that square for maximum fun. Never used it though so I dunno how devastating it is.

Although there was that time where i had magma a few Z-levels beneath the surface. Magma flooding was damn easy, if slow.

First, I give Any Pet Race to dwarves. Then I give Giant Cave Spiders the ability to have children.

A couple Female Giant Cave Spiders and a few dozen of their children behind a row of cage traps can take care of anything.

What I simply refer to as Squad C.

My captain of the guard is decked out in adamantine armour, with a artifact adamantine axe, and has about 220 notable kills to her name atm.

So far nothing has been able to slow her down, I'm rather fond of my one dwarf army.

A giant desert scorpion pit, complete with []menacing steel spikes[] and the mangled remains of my previous captain of the guard.

Some hastily-made cave-in trap connected to a lever inside the fort.
Absolutely fucking deadly: check. Absolutely fucking deadly to everything: check. One-use, needs to be reloaded: check. Requires extensive use of stones: check. Likely to cause other casualties: check. Awesome but impractical: check. Completely dependent of the whims and union of the lever-puller: check. Also very good for causing unfortunate accidents: check.
Yep, if that's not dwarven, then I don't know what is. No, actually, I know, I could somehow add magma to that, but I haven't found any yet.

Hypothetically the dwarfiest mechanism for defense would to be able to seal and magma-flood individual areas of your fortress on command, then drain it to allow goblinite/that indestructible -Pig Tail Sock- to be recovered.
