From On the Origin of Dwarves (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/On_the_origins_of_dwarves):
A dwarven woman, bare from the waist up, holding a suckling newborn in one hand and a battle ax in the other, charging toward you.

Don't forget both the mother and her baby have beards.  :o
Male children have beards anyways. If you put in beards on women, so do girls. FEAR THE WRATH OF BEARDLINGS!

I was playing with DFHack and accidentally set the map on fire.  I now seek to cause fires at will that will fill a given area.  Current idea is to make a finished goods stockpile, no bins, only accepting wooden goblets.  They should burn fairly well.  Otherwise, perhaps just some soil and grass, and I can use a flooding trap while the grass recovers.
Fill the wood with cheap elven booze, and then... just add magma!

+Bonus points if you use modded booze made from elves.

There, I dwarf'd it up a notch 8)
Second dwarfness notch: modded barrels made from elf bone.

Reminds me of the "Best goblin executions" -thread...

My most dwarven defences? My dwarves!

Surface wise, my current fort is surviving very well with a 'dodge this' trap and a fairly decent military.
I'm currently expanding down in the caverns and I'm sure I'll need to do something interesting to make them more efficient at repelling things from below, but so far a bunch of cage and weapon traps, plus a full time cavern squad and a bunch of chained tamed animals, are doing the job pretty well.

All of this: *touch wood*.

dual pick weilding woman whos stats are roughtly double or tripple the average dwarfs.

This individual managed to ensure the survival of the entire fortress on her own for yonkys.

fought a hydra once, she cracked 5 of the 7 skulls herself in a group of 30 dwarfs mobbing it.

her oldest warrior freind is a mace dwarf who has only 1 arm called stukos.

Heavily scarred too. and one of the picks has a name ^^

lol. That was my thread. We ended up talking about making elf barrels and then making them explode all over elves. 'Twas a great thread indeed.

I'm working on making a ring of fire as follows:
Cross-section:
  _
O_O

Every 4 or so there will be a trapdoor of some sort (haven't chosen that yet), controlled mechanically.

The ring of fire will be 2 levels above the flat ground, and filled with lava. Just inside this ring and on the ground level, there will be the standard wall, with 4 or so entrances all controlled by me. Then when an enemy comes, I can drop fire on them at any time.

Built a really nice watertower situated over a tunnel. When the gobbos entered the tunnel, a pressure plate sealed both ends, and activated the drawbridge, which dumped the contents of the tower into the tunnel, drowning the rodents. Yes, its been done before, but the drainage system of the floodtrap irrigates my beloved tree farms, and fertilizes them at the same time. The flood doesn't harm the trees, and kills the shrubs. At last a new use for goblins.

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration

I have been toying with an idea for a Magma Entrance that is a repeating magma fall which has a 2 second gap between Burning FUN and a safe entrance. Add that with another Magma fall behind it, then another and then another...
Starwars EP1 PM Reactor Barriers???

And if someone gets through they get a reward. they would get caught in a Cage trap, dropped into a single tile pit with a hatch over top of it after being stripped bare and a single whip trap with one weak whip, constantly whipping them over and over and over again. Bonus points for setting this up in a Glacier...

What's the other arm called, then?

(Sorry, can't resist an obvious feedline.)

My dwarven defences?  Massive ditches and earthworks.  Except mostly in native stone, but 'stoneworks' sounds more like a East German electronic heavy metal rock band.

My most dwarven defense system consists of a large reservoir of magma placed so it dumps directly over my front gate, which can be sealed by a a magma proof bridge. in my most recent fort the reservoir is directly fed by a volcano, with 4 z levels of magma pipe above it. the protective pit (empty space under bridge) will fill with magma to create a magma moat.

Yeah.  Thus why I didn't make a trap.  In it's current state the fortress didn't need a trap, the whole damn fortress is a trap.

Wait, flooding kills shrubs?  Now they tell me.

You know, I forgot about using it on elves. I apologize for my elfiness. Next spring, the elves shall feel my wrath!
