Sovereignty, of any country or entity, is an illusion. It exists only in our collective minds. To the extent that it does exist, the question of whether it was violated  or not has a different, but equally valid, value for each individual person considering it. However, your opinion in the matter is irrelevant, and so is mine. Although all opinions are valid in terms of truth, only those whose holders can back them with overwhelmingly powerful might or diplomatic rhetoric (which is, ultimately, melrly a conduit to might), can have any relevance on influence on the course of the current act of the farce which has been playing out on the world's stage since time immemorial.

I find it weird that people keep bringing up this argument.  It seems to be saying "You can't change the US government's position because it's stronger than you".

Yeah, well... duh.  We already knew that.  That doesn't stop us from discussing the legality or correctness of the actions, though.

True. But if you tweak that hypothetical situation and replace Russia and China with, say, Canada or England, I don't think that the United States would mind quite as much.

If it were done without informing the American authorities in advance, I think it would be.

In order for the Russia/China comparison to work we would first need:

1) Years of lavish aid to the United States from Russia or China
2) A terrorist who is a stated enemy of both the US and Russia or China and who had been supporting large scale operations within the US for years
3) The CIA to be compromised to the extent that there is a serious risk of the plans getting leaked
4) A large scale uprising in the US occupying large parts of the country

Basically, the US would have to be a very different state.  One much less stable then it is right now.  And in such conditions I think the US probably would have responded the way Pakistan did.

I think there was only some international outrage after they killed the obviously wrong man(out of many more assassinated), so the precendent has been set up much earlier.

Or maybe more pointedly, Operation Opera, where Israeli planes flew through Saudi airspace to bomb an Iraqi nuclear power plant (full of French technicians).  The pertinent element here being the Saudi airspace; Israel and Saudi Arabia may not be "allied" in any meaningful sense (in 1976 that is), but they were in a stable peace and mutually allied in some way to essentially all of NATO.  Which doesn't even get into the extremely dubious "threat" posed by a civilian nuclear reactor in Iraq manned and administered by the French.  It instantly earned Israel the ire of basically every diplomatic body, including a resolution of condemnation from the UN, for being a gross violation of international sovereignty and any sense of a "due process" of war, for lack of a better term.

Of course, being Israel, nobody remembers or cares or made any attempt to actually punish them for the action, except states that would want to punish Israel for existing at all.  Still a comparison though.

Well, there was that other 'operation' when they went and kidnapped Eichmann from Argentina in 1960. The Argentinians got riled up because of the violation of their sovereignty, and the UN passed some resolution which essentially amounted to wagging a finger.
Can't see this one ending in so severe a punishment. As some people asserted earlier, might makes right, and only thing that suffers is one's international reputation.
Which might or might not be a big deal.
