No, it's off topic, but there isn't much left to say at this point on Bin Laden.

I think the corporation thing was a tangent brought on by a facetious post.

And here we are.  Patient Zero:

Yes, but the military-industrial complex is an extension of the evil corporatist overlords. You can't trust them.

Shame on you Nikov, you and your wife who exists and is sexy.

I thought it was transparently silly, actually.

That's not it. Corporations are entities composed of individuals who, while ususally possessing a moral compass on the personal level, cannot translate that into the overall effect of the entity on the world due to the objective of pure profit. The minority of those who do not possess a moral compass do not help matters, as ruthlessness tends to result in greater profits, and so these individuals rise to the top while their more moral peers remain low in a corporate hierarchy.

A corner cut here, a bribe there, and before anyone knows what's happened the corporation in question is allowing atrocities to stay in the green. Malice doesn't really enter into it, but greed certainly does.

I agree. (While I have never experienced this phenomenon directly, I have encountered its cousin within nonprofit corporations (I volunteer at a science museum), wherein a bunch of intelligent, well-intentioned, and generally industrious individuals come together to operate an educational facility wherein literally even the "out of order" signs do not work properly. This is true, they have a standardized design of "out of order" sign that they use whenever anything breaks at the museum, these signs, however, do not actually contain the words "out of order" or "broken" anywhere on them.)

I've also read a lot of philosophy dealing with this sort of concept in relation to a larger phenomenon generally referred to as "the thing", "the combine", "the black iron prison", or "The Conspiracy" (with a capital C).

...Dude, the whole reason sovereignty is the question, is that the "holders" you're talking about, are the American and Pakistani governments.  A violation of sovereignty is a real question about a real issue, not illusory, because those are the entities it matters to.

Just because something does not exist doesn't mean it cannot influence the world for the worse. Take, for example, the deities of the ancient Aztec pantheon, (to give an example that won't get me banned); They don't exist yet their influence was the cause of thousands of deaths.

And more to the point, what I was saying is that unless the Pakistani government actually takes offense at the United States' actions, and enough so to take some kind of action or at least badmouth us to the UN or the press then the question of whether their soverignty was violated is ultimately so much vapor, as the Pakistani government is the only potentially wronged entity that also has the economic/military/diplomatic influence to translate that abstract opinion into a meaningful real world effect.

Errr... Just edit your post next time if you have something you want to add and no one has posted since, triple posts are a bit annoying.

Al Qaeda: Congrats, Mohummad! You are now our mastermind!

Mohummad: But... But... But what about blowing myself up and getting 47 virgins?

Al Qaeda: You just get them at a much later date.

Mohummad: FUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

Mohummad, human terrorist, has gone berserk!

Good news and bad news. Good news; you really did get 72 virgins! Bad news; they're all obsessed with World of Warcraft.

You intend to become a suicide bomber first? Because Nikov was skillfully interpreting their 72 virgin rewards.

Yeah, they're obsessed with WoW but they look like supermodels. And they have good personalities.
