Blunt damage protection
« on: May 01, 2011, 04:23:45 am »

Bogeymen attacked me and one of these bastards punched me in lower body and bruised my guts.I was wearing a copper breastplate, 2 bronze chain mails, a coat, one more piece of clothing (don't remember what it was), iron chain leggings and 2x trousers. How is that possible? Was that a simulation of a weak/corroded spot or a hole in the armor (but all these thing have 100% coverage so probably not)? Or was that punch so powerful that armor  wasn't able to stop it? Or maybe it transferred so much energy that despite the external layer withstood the impact, the internal layer has been damaged? (I mean a situation like thishttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fcTl0p17GM 2:15)
And what is the best protection (except dodge and block and parry) versus blunt weapons? Is it better to wear more clothes (they are soft and should make the impact weaker) or more armor (it's heavy so it should  block it better)?

blunt weapons are made to penetrate armour.

so use marksdwarves / dragons / caged FBs to deal with them rather than risk your poor tin can dwarves in copper.

(steel is much better!)

Note that bogies are abnormally strong. Human sized critters can't throw punches like that.

That was a punch lol

Is it possible to get anything made of steel in adventure mode (except abandoning a fort with steel stuff inside or starting as a dwarf)?

How can I check their size?

You'll need to use something like DFWorldTinker to get ahold of their raw file, then check it in there.

My current world has bogeymen that range in size from 13000 to 20000. However, they all also appear to have
[NATURAL_SKILL:WRESTLING:9]
[NATURAL_SKILL:BITE:9]
[NATURAL_SKILL:MELEE_COMBAT:9]
[NATURAL_SKILL:GRASP_STRIKE:9]
[NATURAL_SKILL:STANCE_STRIKE:9]
[NATURAL_SKILL:DODGING:9]
[NATURAL_SKILL:SITUATIONAL_AWARENESS:9]
which makes them far more skilled at fighting than most critters you'll encounter. Their strength is also slightly above dwarven normal, but not very significantly so.

Chain armor doesnt provide much blunt protection and breastplate probably doesnt extend to lower body. Greavers should help.

The upper body and lower body are counted as 0 steps away, and so both always covered.

Armor doesn't protect against blunt attacks. You might want a shield and moar dodging skill and agility.

Pity you can't mod in reactive armour...
Or wait...
Does heat transfer on strike?
If your species has a cold body temp...
But it would probably INcreace blunt damage. Or, you know, blast you with boiling stuff more than him.

The whole idea of blunt weapons is that they bypass armor.

Armor stops it from penetrating, however nothing can stop the kinetic impact. This is why its very common to have broken ribs after being shot through a bullet proof vest. The vest catches the bullet and prevents it from penetrating, but it still has kinetic energy.

Then you would get eaten by a dragon. Dragons hate Nerf.

A bullet-proof vest works by diluting the impact over a larger area. If it didn't, the bullet would go right through you just the same, only taking part of the vest with it. Rigid armor would protect you from impact damage as well, as would soft armor. The former does this by spreading the force over a larger area, diluting the impact, and the latter by spreading the impulse over a longer time.

Both shield you somewhat from the energy of the impact as well — the momentum is spread out over a larger mass, so speed has to drop in proportion to the mass, but the energy goes as the square of the speed, so the energy of the impact goes down in proportion to mass.

This notion that armor won't help kinetic impacts is pure fiction.

Get a leather cloak and hood. Cloaks and hoods are magical pieces of clothing that can turn even steel away from it's wearer.

I'm serious, I trained my adventurer to legendary swordsdwarf trying to cut a goblins head off. He was already missing both his feet and his right arm, but his leather cloak and hood kept turning away my steel sword when I tried to strike his noggin. Every time. Many, many, many times. Eventually I got tired and poked his left arm until he bled out.

They don't stop bogeyman feet though, nor do iron masks apparently.
