We must have more dragons to appease the malevolent volcano gods

Dragons actually have FIREIMMUNE_SUPER, but that just prevents BURN type damage, not HEAT. Dragons regularly die in the heat. One died after wrestling a swordsman a little too long near a burning tree. Another seemed to accumulate too much burning corpsepieces in its mouth....  They all have STANDARD_FLESH set. Hm, maybe mod them to be made of, say, bauxite?...  Bauxite dragons...  yeah, right...

Yeah, maybe their resistance to heat should be upped a little bit. My tame dragon once died because he was next to a burning stockpile...

Dying in magma sounds right to me, though. And concerning the discussion, magic in or not, I don't see why breathing fire *necessarily* implies being immune to fire...

It follows the same logic by which an Atreides Sonic Tank is impervious to sonic attack. Several anecdotes in russia are based off firebreathing dragons NOT being immune to fire (I remember at least one), thus marking the situation as silly and/or unrealistic. Personally, if I were to discover in myself an ability to breathe fire, I would make sure my body is protected from accidental sneezes. The evolution caters to that for dragons.

Also the same logic that makes that makes marksdwarves immune to arrows? Oh, wait. Nevermind.

How exactly is dragonskin supposed to be resistant to it's own firebreath but still absorb enough heat to let a gigantic reptile function normaly?

Simple. It lets HEAT through, but is not damaged by it. Dragons, being reptiles, should actually benefit from heat, as their metabolism increases. After some point though, the reptiles will become dizzy and stunned. Dragons are a bit tougher than common reptiles, so they would withstand heat to a much larger degree.

Asehujiko, do you realize you bumped a thread over a year old to add a comment that had nothing to do with what the thread is even about?  :(

And by "over a year old" you mean "less than a month old," right?

12-20-07 and 15-1-08 are 21 days apart, not "over a year".

Yeah, I get confused with 2008 sometimes too.  :p

To clarify my point on the Sonic Tank - the tank is built to be sonic-attack-proof, because otherwise, every time it fires, it would inflict some damage onto itself. Also, in a massive attack situation, friendly fire is very much possible (especially with the kind of weapon the tank uses), so the tank must be protected.

You can say "Well, humans designed it that way.". But isn't nature a designer too? A dragon would have to live among numerous dangers, including other members of its kin. It would have to have a measure of defence against an attack common for their race. As such, the dragons would evolve to be highly resistant to fire. And as I also said, it is generally a good idea to have a means of protection against your own weapon.

As for marksdwarves... heh, well they ARE protected against arrows, but to a degree that usually does not allow standing carelessly under direct fire. If they had to fight other marksdwarves for a couple of centuries, I think only the most arrow-proof would survive.

Careful there -- you're coming quite close to the naturalistic fallacy.  Your subsequent text gives arguments based on evolution, but you need to keep clear that evolution does not target one "superior design" over all others for a specific niche.  Evolution, via mutation, will try anything, even the crazy things.

Many thousands or even millions of years to get an off-shoot of the race that is more arrow-proof than normal.  Natural selection is slow, even (or especially) with something as lethal as direct combat.
