ok, firt of all, why would you even want to do that? it prevents you from getting a catsplosion
making your cats stronger will probably result on cats being so strong goblins can't kill it and it will just be ridiculous at that point

anyway, if you want to make them stronger all i know is that:
check youi df file
go into raw
objects
creature domestic

the cat will be on that list

Ask for help strengthening a creature in the Modding forum, and read up about it on the DF Wiki.  The cat raw is in creature_domestic.txt, but you will have to learn a little bit about what all of the numbers mean.  You could just copy everything in from the tiger raw, for example,  but then you would not have a pet domestic animal.  Good luck with your project.  I, too, am made unhappy by kittens who are killed in my fortresses.  I used to be able to use Dwarf Companion to teleport them in to safety when invaders struck, but that utility was apparently abandoned and nothing reliable seems to have taken its place for such purposes.

Make a pasture in a safe indoor location.  Assign your kittens to it.  They will no longer be killed by random goblins.

If you kill all but your strongest male cat and then have him breed with the the female cats, then do it over and over again, you'll slowly change your cats genetics to increase their strength.

I could be wrong about this (they may need the [INTELLIGENT] tag as well), but just add [CAN_LEARN] to the kittens raws and you can end up with skillable kittens. A Legendary +5 Biter has to be worth something. I wonder if any other skills would go up while they're just hunting vermin and not fighting? Then it's survival of the fittest......

You would be forced to unbalance the game heavily. I have several war tigers and they are not that good. Heck, even war elephants, who can kill trolls easily, are butchered by goblins footmen. You'd need to create a mutant cat.

On that note, anyone know if modding them to have "Working Mouths" gets them to carry vermin to stockpiles like it used to?

I'll give it a try some time.  I see it sorts by species now.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
