Ok first of all, i am not one of thoose 12 year olds on forums asking people to make games for them.

I got this idea, its all about alot of matter(like those first gasses occuring early after big bang) spinning around a black hole, a few temporary gravity vortexes are placed to help speed up the forming of systems. This matter combines, some of it makes some kind of fusion reaction, creating stars, other stuff combines to become more heavy/advanced matter, like coal for example, then gravity works for us, creating planets and stuff. At some point the gameplay becomes more than watching a 4-8 star galaxy form, from theese beutfifully simulated 2d pixel planets, life arises! Each player(Or just the player) chooses one of theese randomly generated creatures and then they set keys for every muscle and voluntary action. The players can now, if their figure's features allow, to dig or gather plants or whatever, and somehow combine it, some matter can be combined to make other kinds of matter, (like plant sap and some kind of powder would become glue, wich could be useful for making tools) each player has the ability to cause the "fusion" reaction, causing new elements to be created from the ones they possesed. The player is also able, due to full control of all voluntary abilities possesed by the animal he/she controls to do advanced maneuvers, like pouring water into their mouths, applying sap to a stick and then attaching a rock, knapping rocks, sniffing random chemicals in attempt to cure some kind of medical condition, whatever. The game progresses, and within hours, if the figures controlled are able to(You can always choose "give up sentience" and wait for some fitting animal to appear) they can travel in space, perform weird experiments, blow each other up, melt another player's planet with plasma/tamed volcano whatever they want.

The "universe" itself would be simulated, think "Earth Editor from Dan-Ball", just with more.. rigid physics, pressure and heat and reactions occuring from it too, but the elements will be randomly generated, complete with physical intrisics(melting/freezing point etc.) and reactions with other elements. Gravity would allow planets to form, heat/pressure would allow geothermal stuff to happen. And there is this one mystical thing, the more "atom number" an element gets, the more crazy/useful it would be come, fission would cause it to split into elements with lesser "atom value" and fusion would cause more crazy elements. Magnetic force would just be some kind of force pushing stuff around, occuring on everything and is the actual bond of particles.

The biology stuff would be increddible simple, DNA would be increddibly simple, actual physical strings growing, controlling wich elements around them to fuse/split, and would be hard-coded elements, like a "spine here" or a "nerve here", "tooth here" etc. The brain would also be hardcoded elements, like "morale understanding" "fear hormone" "im dying, i'd better go release alot of drugs hormone", the "AI" would just be a loop of nerve signals activating different brain cells like "I am hungry, i go look for food, elements i can digest" or "That guy attacked me, spass all limbs untill he dosent move anymore/flee if theres lotsa fear hormones". Also every creature would either replicate through sex, or some kind of mix between mitosis and egg laying(Gather enough stuff and energy to produce egg and drop it), eggs would be cases of whatever material the body decides to make it off, inside DNA like the one of the layer would float among organic materials to ensure the egg wont use rock or poo elements or whatever and create HORRIBLE ABOMONATIONS, of course if you want, you can use your syringe and inject crazy elements in.

The gameplay itself would be intuitive, before creatures come, you are little wispy entities capable of manipulating stuff weakly, and when they come, you have to invade their minds and try to crack them, like killing the "im an animal" braincells with small electric shocks, attempting not to damagde that balance cell over there. The player's view would be completely relative to the creature controlled, like even if you are standing on the "bottom"(wich dosent exists) of the planet, it would seem like your standing up and not just hanging, wich is the issue with most games with radial gravity. If you are so unlucky to choose an eyeless creature, the client will attempt to make some kind of visual imagery (or just point arrows or something) of the other senses, like hearing and taste. If the braincell is in the players brain, you can even imagine and dream! Wich just means that you can draw clientside materials on the screen, with the only elements being one of each states of matter(so if someone is bored they can just draw a penis or whatever), and when relaxed and eyes closed, your client will begin generating random imagery(Useful for AFK!) and maybe choose some kind of pre-generated scenery to explore, or maybe even something you remembered!(Blink eyes three times or something and the client will download the current scenery visible.) and if you are cool enough, you can find some kind of third eye/gate key to escape your mortal body, leaving it comatose, and explore the surrounding/haunt something.(Only maybe).
The players are able to communicate through chat, or if the creature has a voice, and theres a microphone, to communicate locally, audible! The player is also able to "zoom" at things, so you can see the whole of that astroid homing in on you, or when you need to get that cog-wheel right in your soon to be done planetary clock! The client would blur things out, and the time before image is clear is the half of the relative scale, so going to a 1m focus from 10m focus would take 5 seconds before you see everything pixel clear!

So i would like to hear some response, what would you do? Other than flying about in space and doing stuff, i would proably mess with genetics or do !!SCIENCE!! or something

I haven't actually read all of it but it sounds like it will even more impossible for your computer to handle than a Dwarf Fortress adamantine elevator in 3d :P

You could do shared computing between the server and clients, but then it would be best over LAN, hell look at the minecraft, 2Gb is hella lot of stuff, and an i7 or some increddible server with like 32 cores running on some dedicated linux would handle it like a dream!

It sounds like a fantastic idea, but really, without some form of proof of concept I don't think it'd even be possible without life dedication and an ass tonne of resources.

Had similar ideas. But i started in quantum level (you select few values for constants, then it simulates what quantum effects happen and what is stable, when it tries to make elements, when big bang and gravity simulation (using opencl - have experience) then fusion simulation in stars and lastly octree voxel editable planets)

Well, you cited Coal as a heavy element, and I'm about ready to slap you upside the head.

Basically, you want to make a Spore. Unfortunately, your universe idea for one, is flawed (please read up on astrophysics before claiming that hydrogen and helium combine to form coal and iron).

I'll stop shooting holes in your idea, and while it is a good idea, right now it would be extremely processor intensive and probably be unrunnable on ANY modern computer.

Actually hydrogen DOES fuse into helium, and three heliums can combine into carbon-12.

Improvement: rather than writing a massive physics simulator to do something the player can only watch, why not just generate planets/stars from scratch? Size, unique minerals, landforms, etc. can all be done without doing anything nearly that complicated.

The thing about these massive-simulation ideas is that in the end, it's about 5% of the effort to create something that works identically. To actually simulate physical DNA, for example, you would have to code the individual elements that make up the acids and figure out how in the hell you're going to troubleshoot biology itself. It's much simpler to have a DNA object containing genetic variables, and that would work twice as well anyway.

I like the wisp-creatures/mind-hacking idea, that'd be a cool gameplay mechanic. Professional ghosts!

One common misconception people make when talking about games/programs/computers is the difference between what is "simple to do" for a computer and what is "simple for a computer to do in X time".
You can do a lot with a huge amount of particles and applying physics to them on a computer, the actual implementation can even be simple, however to do it in real time or even any time worth mentioning [ie, you could perceive changes and enjoy watching it] would require such amazing complexity that i doubt anyone could ever manage it not just now, but in the foreseeable future.


One of the issues is that..  a computer can do billions of amazingly simple tasks in real time.... but not trillions, certianly not the astronomically large number that would be involved here.

Try opening a image program, make a 100X100 pixel image, try doing some transformation to it while watching your windows task manager. see how much memory it is currently using/processing power. Try the same thing with a 1000x1000pixel image. Still should be very fast and doable. Try it with a 10000x10000pixel image.

...And you'll see how fast things become terribly inefficient and completely useless once the scale gets too big if your doing "simple" things.



"simple" is often harder for a computer at a large scale then complicated things are.

Thats why if you want to really make something like this a reality what you should be focusing on is how to cheat the system and fake it, rather then create a simple system.

I love the idea, myself.  But Rift is right in how things would work on a computer.  Its alot easier to create a procedurely generatored world, I.E. Spore, SimLife, ect... and then add what you want ontop of an established system that you can modify with simple commands than it is to generate it all from scratch from single building blocks all the way up to sentient life. lol. 

It could possibly be done, but it would take alot of resources, and a very talented group of programmers to get it to even work right, much less become an enjoyable experience.  Somethign to look forward to in the future.  8)

I think the proof of concept is the powder toy in radial gravity mode and cortex command, my friends computer can have a few thousand pixels moving at the same time, like when we nuked the whole surface to expose gold and get rid of baddies. Also the universe would be simple, no actual elements, because nobody wants to type all that in right? Instead they are randomly generated. The planets would also be scaled, maybe with a radius of only 100 pixels. And particles in huge amounts moving could be "clustered" into groups, so that raging beam of plasma would not crash the entire server, when further detail is needed, when it hits your face, the server unclusters the bit where the beam collides, so realistic but not super laggy face melting! Also to prevent the particles from having too much data, its just a lookup number from a table of elements!

There is a game that just came out called universe sandbox that you might want to check out, its more about planets and the whatnot, but, yah, check it out
