More Furniture: More Lights!
« on: April 29, 2011, 12:03:36 pm »

I'm thinking of assembling a set of new buildings that have little practical value but that add character to rooms, and misc. trade goods for dwarves to buy and adventurers to have.

There are a few that I want to take from existing mods- Display Cases, bonfires, clocks. I'll talk to the mod makers before making any use of these, of course.

Here are some of the things I'd like to add, some of which may already exist, I'm sure:

Desks: Made from tables, look like tables, but dwarves don't eat at them.

Rug: Uses cloth.

Bookmaker's Workshop: Yeah, books. Makes paper, is used to write books. Technically pages and books are made from trees, these trees can be named things like "fine" so we'll have "fine pages" or "leatherbacked books". Books won't do much.

Bookshelf: Thematic construction. Perhaps it may be possible to improve the student skill by reading.

Tableware: Lots of more uses for clay. Good for plates, pitchers, ewers, patters, knives, forks, spoons. All of this to go with the Mug.

Keg: Again thematic. Not sure what it'd be good for.

Sentry Point: A building for ordering civilians to stand around at a spot. Possibly trains observer skill, but possibly not. It would be most useful as a way to keep civilians near the siege equipment they operate. Could also be used to keep an eye on a place.

Stove/hearth: Thematic building for keeping a room warm. May have a "feed fire" job that consumes fuel and produces a lump of room-temperature air that could hypothetically change the temperature of a room.

Altar/podium: Thematic structure; may practice speaking skill.

Practice Dummy: Uses some armor and padding, plus a stock of training weapons, and trains specific weapon skills. Doesn't train armor, "fighter", dodging, or other skills, so no replacement for training.

I'm still thinking up other things to include, and I'll put up some version of this or another pretty soon.

Most of these would be pretty useless. Like nobles mugs.

The only use would be scenery, "Viewed a nice keg lately".

That's the point.

Thanks for the tip, Ultimuh. I'll see if I can borrow those.

Are there any other thematic mods out there?

If there was a way to know the temperature in a place, or if dwarves cared if something was warm or cold, then the hearth idea would be pretty neat.  As it is though, serving as a cool and pretend-useful decoration is still a good idea that I like.

You could use some of the fake-cooking reactions and add them so that you can cook with it.

The wood furnace does that. Dwarves enjoy being near a wood furnace when wood is burned.

To piss off elves, no doubt! If you want a hearth, just use a wood furnace.

About books: I've looked at the Dwaven Higher Learning mod, and that looks good but it's a little overboard. For this mod, I'd like to go a bit more straightforward. Here's what I'm thinking.

Books come in a few types. General Literature, which is the only book that can be made locally. You can use these to make general bookshelves. I can't think of a way to make bookshelves actually store books, though.

There are also medical texts, physics texts, siege texts, and novels, which practice various medical skills, mechanic, siege engineering, and various social skills. I want to make it so that these books can only be imported, and like the DHL mod, have a small chance of being consumed. This will at least prevent a player from building a bookmaker, making a medical book, and having a dwarf sit there and read it until he's Urist McHouse.

"Don't worry there, my friend, you're in good hands. I wrote the book on medicine. And then I read it! I taught me all I know."

Any other furniture that might be nice to add?

In Genesis I create vellums from leather in the tanner's workshop, and then make books out of them (and scrolls in the future). It's pretty straightforward and is better than trees in my opinion, because it suits the fantasy theme better :).

I also use potted plants, those add nice looks to hallways.

It would be cool to have braziers/torches, even though we don't need light.

Totems would be another cool decorative element: take a totem and build it.

You already covered rugs, but animal hides would be a good alternate version too (a bear hide on the floor near a chimney). Wait, yeah... Chimneys :D.

Woulds be neat if it made sneaking more difficult.
Then we would not need cats to guard fort entrances anymore.

Hmm.. then WHAT ELSE are we going to do with all these cats?

What would be the best way to make something only available as an import?

Huh, any way we can use the "unused" skills mentioned in the wiki?

Balance
Coordination
Discipline
Druid
Poet
Reader
Speaker
Tracker
Wordsmith
Writer

About half of those would be great for making books...

The best import is a foreign toy/instrument :).

I'm personally in favor of some large-scale constructions.  Like, use the sprites for engraved walls, and make a 3x3 "pillar" workshop.  A 5x1 wall sprite that is labeled "wall" and obstructs passage.  This means it can be broken by a building destroyer.  Or a 1x1 similar fake wall.  Not good for defense, but a lot of DF is in the RP, right?

Also, there's a way to make a custom workshop use the building material as its color.  How is that done?
