Manual Adventurer Natural Attacks
« on: April 29, 2011, 07:49:26 am »

As is, Adventurers can attack with all attacks manually.
However, breath attacks are not included in this.

I propose that the Fire (F) button brings up a list of all ranged attacks the current adventurer possesses (including crossbows and bows), from which you select which you want to use (and which ammo, if applicable), and then where you wish to attack. A side effect of this is that
Furthermore, I propose that Breath attacks are reclassified, and their syntax be changed. Instead of being a generic "Breath Attack", I believe the ability should be linked to a body part. Loss of that body part results in the loss of that attack. The same with nervous damage, and excessive muscle damage/bone breaking.
This means that rather than have everything spitting it's load everywhere, you can have fire imps that actually require hands to hurl flames, magma crabs that require mouths to spit basalt, and eye lasers. Delicious eye lasers...

Aside from the main suggestion, I believe that the breath attacks and special attacks could be expanded to include things such as web (I know things can eject web as it is, but it is linked to a tag and the whole creature. Having web spinnerets would be better) and entire living creatures. This opens up things such as throwing leeches at the enemy, and having creatures able to release clouds of bees as a defence.

The problem is that in the base game, you can't do natural attacks, therefore Toady probably doesn't have any plans to add this into the game.

Iv seen people who haven't had a redheaded person in their family for quite a while, and then out of nowhere two out of three of their children have red hair.
What color was the mailman's hair?

Actually, I don't think so.  We're going to get styles and special attacks and various flavors of kung fu for adventurers to learn, and those will have additional attacks that will have to be called up out of a menu to perform them.  That way, you will have the ability to tell the game to attack with the flat of the axe instead of always chopping, if that's what you want.

Toady can just include natural attacks in as a type of special attack when this change happens, but it's still a ways off.  Caravan arc will take a while to get sorted out, but the upgrades to the adventurer-style combat will come eventually.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.

It was just a suggestion to open up more things for modding.
The second half of the suggestion, however, isn't dependent on whether an Adventurer can use natural attacks.
